Buying my first android phone

badkuk

Newbie
hi peeps,

Planning to buy my first android phone; not really into the bangs and whistles, i just want a phone that is updated fast.

Right now Google is still pushing the Nexus One as the developer phone; however with the release of the Nexus S(which i think is SGS-based), i'm having second thoughts about which phone to get.

What do you guys think?

Nexus S will be the better choice. This is because sooner or later the nexus one will be phased out in favour of new developer phones i.e Nexus S.
Also, the nexus S has many more hardware features which the nexus one does not have. So it would be in your interest to acquire a phone which is able to use every feature available to it from gingerbread and further.

May I ask why you're interested in quick updates if the bells and whistles of the device do not matter? Because most updates add bells and whistles, and do very little to the core OS other than tweaks.

The problem with Samsung is that it doesn't seem that responsive with updates...even now i hear some users are having problems with the Froyo update.

i guess it's all about value for money for me; sure, i may not need froyo, but if i'm gonna spend 600 bucks on an Android device, i'd sleep much better knowing it won't become "obsolete"(in OS update terms) in a year's time B)

i'm also looking into Android development...sure i can use the SDK, but having a device is way cooler B)

But as it's Google's flagship device it'll get everything first, Samsung only provide the hardware

I dont get it, the title mentions desire and galaxy s, then the thread mentions nexus one and s.

Is it all 4, or just Nexus' youre interested in?

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is an odd question. Not interested in the bangs and whistles, but wants the most up to date?

What i'm trying to say is that i really don't need an 8-mpixel camera, or Hd playback, or the latest and greatest 4.3-inch AMOLED/SuperLCD display, etc.; what i worry about is whenever a new Android OS is released, developers will most likely start developing for that version, and not necessarily make sure their apps will on the older ones. And i tend to like to take things apart and see how they work( hopefully with the guidance of the resident gurus here)

And take Eclair vs. Froyo for example: the Desire only has around 170mb internal memory for apps. Then along comes Froyo where you can install apps on the expansion card. That to me is a significant issue, and i don't want to miss out on anything similar in the future.

Sorry for the confusion: i sorta assumed that the Nexus One and HTC Desire are more or less clones of each other. i actually meant HTC Desire as more stores carry it here in the Philippines.

Mods, kindly edit/move this post if desired(hah, desired :D )

If that's all your after just pick a popular phone. Dev's wil always follow the most popular because that's where the most sales are, and thus the most supported apps.

Hey guys, im looking to purchase my first android phone but theres so many choices. I've narrowed down my choices to these 2:

HTC desire HD, Nexus S

I live in Canada so I wouldn't be able to get 3g on any of these devices but thats okay for me as i'm not on a data plan anyways. I like the look of the Sense UI but i'm looking to get into the rooting scene anyways once I get my device. Would there be a way to put sense on the nexus S in the future?

Anyways if any of you own either device, can you give me some opinions on them?

Installing sense on the Nexus S would be illegal because Sense is intellectual property of HTC. Not like it would stop people from doing it of course....

I won't expect too much though. A large bounty has been put on the internet for a functional version of Sense on the Galaxy S (which uses similar hardware to the Nexus S) for a while, but no significant progress has been made so far.

You can simulate the Sense experience to a certain degree with Lancherpro.

Tough choice, hard to go wrong with either.

Sense is much more than a UI, it's a unifying concept - see this post and #27 in that same thread -

Personally, I like Sense and just use a rooted version of it. If the above appeals to you, probably the DHD is your best choice.

If you're just looking for the UI look and feel, then LauncherPro as snapper.fishes suggested and the Beautiful Widgets seem to fill the bill for a lot of folks, and might make the NS the better choice.

Hope this helped, best luck!

The Desire is sort of on the way out right now really. It's by no means old, but it's being surpassed by other devices. If you want the newest thing around right now, wait for the Nexus S, as it will get all the updates straight from Google first and won't required waiting for for manufacturers or carriers.

The desire is on its way out and even though a Froyo update for HTC phones is supposedly coming in march next year, The Nexus S will already have Gingerbread. Plus the Nexus S is Google's new flagship phone so it will get all the new updates first.

Thanks for all the input. How is the battery on the DHD? I read that it is only a 1230mAH which seems relatively small compared to Nexus S' 1500mAH battery.

Done.

This was originally katana24's thread, but you both have similar questions, so I thought it best to give you both the benefit of answers from each thread.

my apologies sir katana24....i thought it was common courtesy to search for existing threads/topics, and add questions/comments to it, instead of spawning a new one. No thread hijacking attempts were intended.

i'll start another thread then. no worries B)

No - we're not communicating.

Your thread was ... not in the right forum.

I combined it with one that was.

Please do NOT start another thread - thank you.
