Buying this as a gift :)

My best friend's birthday is next tuesday and he wants a new cellphone. I decided I'd buy Him His first smartphone.

I'm trying to get him over to the Windows Phone 7 side with me and get him either a HTC titan or Samsung focus(We aren't that good of friends for a 500 dollar Lumia 900, JK of course)

But he likes the pricing of Virgin Mobile.

I want to know is this a real good buy? I've glanced through the forum lists and it seems to be rather mixed.

What are any major issues with the phone or software? I've never used Virgin Myself.

It's either this or the ONE V for VM :) I'll post a thread there as well.

But yeah, is this a recommended buy? and what issues does the phone still currently have? I notice a sms issue has popped up.

This phone(htc evo v 4g) is a great phone!!!! But it has it problems which are annoying errors messaging. I would get him the HTC one V. The htc evo v 4g is annoying with the error messages, and may not get any future updates.

other then the sms error you already know of i find the mp3 player in this phone lackluster.my exhibit 4g(a budget phone) is around 4 times as loud and sounds a lot better.

but since this will be his first smart phone he would love it or any smart phone you get him.the main reason to get this phone imo is 4g.if you can get a good signal where you live its a great deal even with the sms errors.

When you say error message what kind? Or do you mean the text message error?

This phone has problems with dropping signal(and data) randomly then getting it back like 3 seconds after. Then there's error message that pop up sometimes when you're texting(not letting you send the message when you first try to). The phone is awesome though, it's smooth and has a nice screen size; it even has 4G if you have 4G in your area. Though if you want a phone with barely any errors then you should get the HTC One V, but it has a small screen size compared to the HTC Evo V 4G. I don't think the One V has any serious problems though. I'll edit this post if I find any.

Edit: One guaranteed problem is the phone becomes extremely slow after a moth or so compared to the Evo V 4G. Though not everybody will notice it :/

everybody is not having that error popup problem. the people who have problems are the ones on the forum sound off to find solutions. i never tried the one v however for a first smart phone this is an awesome piece of equipment. the one v cant match the specs. no phone is without a kink in the armor. this phone comes with the breaks on. right in the powersaving app. one can pop the clutch. opening the clock to full and the second core. ive had no problems to date and i was an early adapter. read evo 3d this is only a software update to ics and sense 3.6. overall highly recomended.

Kevendroid I might actually have to agree with that first sentence; when I first got my phone I never used to have those errors, but I did have the signal fluctuation issues though. Then as soon as I flashed a ROM over at the root section, I started getting those errors. I'm still wondering if some of the VM branded Evo V 4Gs might have updated software.

The only thing detracting from the one V is not so much the size but the lack of a FFC.

I'm considering getting him(Since he thinks Android) the Samsung galaxy blaze 4g and it comes with a free 50 phone card, has 4G speeds of 42mbps and the camera and dual core.

But i have one question.

If you take away the EVO's 4G and the dual core and it was simply a bigger version of the ONE V, would you all still buy it over a One V?

nope i bought this phone for 4g.unlimited 4g was so important to me i returned a nexus and bought another evo.im not sure if the htc amaze also has a 50 phone card but you can find them new on ebay for like 350 or so.

i actully have a sprint branded 3vo v that has tha flashings to vm and ics. i wouldnt blame the roms if this is common to them. the amaze is also a very good piece of hardware. no i would not have got the one v. i would of kept the droid first.

I bought this phone simply for a great dual core processor, 1gb ram(one v has 512mb), tons of storage space, and a huge screen.

The radio interface error is annoying, but not that big of a deal to me. I got it a few times while using the stock rom. Before yesterday I hadn't gotten it in a month. Yesterday I got it once when i rebooted my phone. I just rebooted the phone and resent the texts. No biggy.

I've had, intercept, optimus v, optimus elite, Motorola triumph, venture, and now the evo v. This phone for me has out done the rest (IMO) by a long shot. The size of the screen, speed of rendering in the browser, great multi touch (can actually play games like gun bros, last stand, & deer hunter. Not to mention six guns all smoothly. Oh and THE 3D CAMERA!!! I hear about all the new phones coming out but I won't switch unless it has a 3d camera and specs to blow my mind.

Bad:
Txt msg error on sending (only happened to me the first week or so)
Phone gets hot running some games, (great little war game)

Good:
3d camera + video
4g
Huge ass screen
Great processor (best on prepaid)
ICS (4.0.3)
GPS locks fast (unlike my triumph and venture)
3g works everywhere (unlike triumph)
Great battery life

All the above is my opinion
I can almost guarantee ur friend will be showing u extra love if u got this phone them.

Just to make sure you understand, the Blaze will not have speeds of 42mbps. Theoretically the phone can get to those speeds but they don't get that speed in real life. The tests PC mag did in NYC shows that the average T-Mobile speed they got was under 7mpbs (this was also with a 42mbps phone), though the fastest speed they got was 19mbps.

It does look like VM 3G speeds aren't very good in NYC, at least per PC Mag (maybe someone hear can verify), so you likely would want the Evo V for the 4G -- the average speed is close to what he'd get with the Blaze.

The Evo V is 50% more expensive than the One V but imho is at least 100% more phone. As with anything designed by man it's not perfect but after going through 6 replacement Triumphs for the same price it's pretty damn close.
