Buying used HTC Wildfire

Hi All,
I m actually wanting to buy an android phone for long time. My intention is not to use as a phone rather than explore the features of android and playing with it.

I am from India. One of my friend is selling Wild fire of 11 old month old at 5000 Rupees (~100 USD) while the original price is ~200 USD. Can I go for it? Or i can put some more money and get Samsung galaxy Y.

As a general question, what should i look for while buying used mobiles? Should or Shouldn't I buy a rooted phone? Hw can i identify if a phone is rooted?

Pls share ur ideas on these that can help me to buy new low priced android or used medium level androids.

Well any decent android phone is capable of using to explore the Android OS, Wildfire is a good chose cause its cheap, but since the speed can only go up to 768MHz (if your rooted, but this speed makes phone unstable) you cant explore as much as a Desire which can go to speeds past 1.75GHz (if rooted)

Dont buy a rooted phone even though i doubt they are sold, the Samsung Galaxy Y you mentioned beats the Wildfire on processing speed but check the XDA developers website, because there may not be ROMs available for that model which you need if you want to use your device after rooting

Browse around the internet and compare specs make sure you take not of processing speed

Look for processing speed, and popularity of the phone on XDA developers website
