I think most commentators would say the two best phones on the market at the moment are the One X and SG3. I have not read one bad review of the One X , there have been a few mixed ones about the SG3 (build quality and Samsung software). Loads of comparison reviews out there, choose either you wont go wrong. I am tempted by the One X, but then I am a bit of an HTC fan.

I like to think that I'd make a good reviewer and predictor of future trends - hey, I can dream can't I?
A few years ago I suggested that ever-smaller phones, with ever smaller screens wasn't the way to go, and now they have got larger again!
I've also complained about manufacturers chasing the "we make the thinnest phone" award - Motorola have shown with the Droid Maxx that making a phone 2mm thicker allows for a battery with twice the capacity. I'm still waiting to see how that one pans out.
Most recently I've been dismayed by the slew of new phones that have neither a swappable battery nor expandable memory. It's this alone that has made me decide to defect from HTC to the Samsung Galaxy S3 when my current contract is up. I hope this trend for hardware meanness will be short-lived.
Beyond that, I think reading a few reviews will highlight the relatively minor differences between the One X and the S3. Some of the differences might be important for you, so I don't think anyone can say which one is "best".
I've now seen and handled both phones in both colours (albeit that in some cases the phones were dummies), and my impression is that, in terms of hand and eye appeal, I'd choose the black One X against the white S3, but the blue S3 in preference to the white One X. In other words, the build quality of both phones seemed fine to me and it was the colour that most influenced my unconscious assessment of 'desirability'.
Also, I have to say, I liked the fact that the Samsung didn't have HTC's camera lens bulge, allowing the phone to lie flat on a table - but, in many ways, I think that's the point - two vastly capable phones and either would be more than good enough for users.

I can't see me going for the sg3 had a look. Reminds me of a Hyundai car, may have all the mod cons and look flash but its still a Hyundai...

HTC have been making smartphones for a very long time. They were always network branded Windows Mobile PDA/phones such as the XDA range from O2 in the UK. It's only relatively recently that they have been selling devices under their own name.
I understand that you mean that the One X will not be so wow in terms of the ui.. but I mean, come on , it's such a good looking phone. And , well, A LOT different to a DHD

One of those differences is the lack of a microSD slot. That killed the One X for me. It seems ridiculous for HTC not to have added that! My DHD has the SanDisk 64GB microSD in it and I'm thrilled to have all that storage. The One X has only 32GB built-in with no option to expand. As I said, that killed it for me. I'd have to go with the SG3.

I completely understand what you mean about not having an SD card slot, but I do think that the One series come with 32GB of Dropbox space. Not 100% sure I'd be too happy with being that reliant on cloud storage, but I could get used to it. I only have the 8GB card that came with my DHD anyway, so think that 32GB would be enough for me!

Thought 32gb micro card in my HD desire is plenty, though only recently noticed it has just 0.9gb left!!!
But it holds 8,060 photos and 853 music tracks + all my work and personal documents which isnt bad to my thinking - though tempted by the 64gb card, didnt think the HD could handle more than a 32gb card - thanks for the tip

I agree with the One X's lack of expandable memory being a dealbreaker, was gutted when I found out.
HTC have been great as my Desire HD has been repaired twice (well, second time tomorrow when UPS pick it up). The ICS muck-up could've been handled better but I was happy with my phone as it was. Keep reading all these comments about people being "finished" with HTC on this subject..though I know the Sensation had its problems initially.
And I didn't know we could use the 64GB MicroSD cards either! My next phone will likely be the Samsung S3.
I swaddle my phones with tough packaging so the build quality shouldn't be too much of an issue with the Samsung.
