You Desire data throughput is measured in megabits while its storage capacity is measured in megabytes. And, since there are 8 bits in a byte, it will take 8 times as many megabits to fill one megabyte. (yes, that's oversimplified, but it's the general idea.)
As for storage, you most likely have two locations for storage. The phone itself which holds the system files as well as most apps, and your sd card, which holds user files and data. The amount of space you have left can vary and if your phone storage runs low you may run into problems with the phone's operation. There are many strategies for managing the memory of your phone, most of which you can find in HTC Desire - Android Forums.
If you go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications you should see the available space at the bottom of the screen.
