My HTC Incredible was performing wonderfully and then suddenly north was south and vice versa on Google night sky and compass programs. I have tried taking out battery and no fix. I thought I was doing a figure 8 to calibrate but no fix. Short of a cold start is there a way around this? Are others having a problem with a faulty compass reading?

Doing the figure 8's should fix the compass.
For Sky, go into settings and all the way at the bottom into location. Make sure GPS is selected. Mine (Droid) changed it to 'location based' once, out of the blue. I re-checked GPS and all has been well since. Hopefully that is what happened to yours as well.
