Help Calibre and N7

I don't believe you can sideload books into the google ebook reader app.
For any other ebook app that does support side loading, then sure, I don't see why not. Apparently the amazon kindle app can. The only problem you may have is that the N7 doesn't behave like your typical mounted storage device when plugged into a PC, due to its lack of sdcard, so that might confuse calibre and mean that 'send to device' doesn't work properly.

I don't think Calibre can use MTP but I could be wrong. I use it to convert books to epub format then I use AirDroid to copy them to the tablet (and/or my phone). I then import them into Moon+ Reader. Slow but works well.
I like Calibre for converting things for my KT, but what in the world do you need Calibre for with the N7? It natively reads nearly everything but Kindle format, and the Kindle app relieves that problem.

I concur that Calibre is a marvelous e-book library system. Flexible as can be and under continuous development by a cadre of contributors. Sadly, at this moment, Calibre does not recognize my Nexus 7. And, apparently the Kindle app won't let you side load anything ? So, I installed the Cool Reader app and then I can manually copy books from the Calibre library folder to the Books folder on the N7. That works for me for now. I would bet that the Calibre team will soon be creating the profile for the N7. Watch for updates and check in the Calibre forum.

You can side-load ebooks to your device and the Kindle app will pick them up. This is what you do:
1. Use Calibre to convert your drm-free ebooks to the .mobi format.
2. Copy the .mobi ebooks to the Kindle directory on your "SDCard".
When you open the Kindle app the books you just loaded should be there. If not, just bring up the Kindle menu and click the Sync & Check for Items option.

Are you saying that the Kindle app can open an ePub book? On a side note, can the Kindle Touch open ePub books?

I can't say what s/he is saying but I can answer the side note. No Kindle handles epub. Amazon wants us in their ecosystem and they do that by making it difficult to get books from other sources. You need to convert .epubs to .mobi before any Kindle will load the books.
I'm not judging it, it's a valid and ethical business strategy. It's also I went with the Nook because I don't have to do a conversion to get books from Smashwords on there.
Finally, someone else on here that is a fan of smashwords.

Absolutely! In fact one of the main reasons/justifications for getting the N7 was to have an internet connect reader free of any particular ecosystem (outside of Android's).
Smashwords can be pretty hit and miss but then again so can Amazon and B&N. Since the books tend to be cheaper, I don't feel quite as bad if I get a stinker. Besides with their policy on downloading a reasonably sized sample, it's easier to avoid some of the worst books.
This may be of interest to those who want to sync calibre properly. It connects your device to calibre on the PC (over WiFi, not USB) and makes it show up as a proper connected device. Then you can send books over as you normally would, or add them to your library off of the device. Once you've synced, you can open it up and browse your library of books, hit one to open, and it will open it in a compatible ebook app.
I decided to refund it though, as due to limitations with the kindle app, you can't open a book in the kindle app via calibre companion. Perhaps I'll repurchase it if I find a decent alternative ebook reader app.
Also, it is worth noting that MTP support is coming to calibre (at some point), so you may be better off being patient rather than paying for a solution.

I spent most of the weekend getting calibre setup to talk to FBReader on my N7 using the calibre2opds tool to build an index that my local home apache web server can serve out to FBReader (also works with Moon+Reader or other readers that support OPDS network catalogs). It seems to work quite well once I got it all tweaked to my preferences (and settled on FBReader as my favorite reader app).

Amazon has a "Send To Kindle" application for both PC and Mac is. The method I use for my phones or tablets is to convert my books to .mobi using Caliber, then drop the .mobile files onto the 'send to' icon on my desktop. This allows me the option to send via WiFi to a Kindle or to any specific device running kindle reader. Also, the converted book can be sent and stored on your Amazon cloud space to be downloaded by any device at any time. This latter method is very handy since I don't waste any space on any particular device until I'm in the mood to read it. And YES Amazon allows upload and storage of non-Amazon books into your free cloud space.

Welcome to AndroidForums BryanGraham! Excellent first post! I love Calibre but don't take every update because they occur so frequently. Gonna go grab this one right now!

I've been using calibre2opds for a while now along with FBReader (which lets you define additional opds sources). I run apache on my fedora 17 desktop and make the opds database of all my calibre books available on my LAN through the network. No need to plug in a USB cable
