Call log program and contacts sync question

I am trying to find out how advanced the call log manager is on Android. I come from BlackBerry/WinMo and detail is EXTREMELY important. I have the following questions:

  1. How many call entries can you have?
  2. Does it group together calls from the same person or only display the most previous call (e.g. I call John twice today and he calls me three times today, what would I see)?
  3. What functionality is given from the call manager (e.g. if I have an email address stored for John, can I just hit options on his call entry and send email or is it only storing the phone number in that specific application)?
Also, when syncing contacts for the first time, will it do it both ways or only one way automatically? I have a ton of useless contacts in G-mail and I don't want all of those showing up on my phone when they serve no purpose. Can I have it send my contacts from my phone (with phone number) to gmail so I can then add email addresses and then sync back?

Thanks, guys!

1 - I don't know if there is a cap on call entries. I clear mine out every couple of days. Keeps the list shorter and easier to scroll through, plus memory is limited until they get us the ability to run apps from the SD Card.

2. You would see a seperate line for each call made. Icons denote whether the call was initiated by you or the other party and a seperate icon for missed calls. It shows the duration of the call and how long ago (example: "23 hours ago").

3. If you long press on an entry in the call log the following options come up

Call {number}
View Contact
Edit number before call
Send SMS
Remove from call log

View Contact does not display as an option for numbers not in your contacts.

If you wanted to send an email you'd choose "View Contact" and from the Contact Entry click on the email address in the Send Email section of that person's entry. Slightly more work, 2 taps(possilbly scrolling, too) but you can get the task done.

But keep in mind the beauty of google products is that they are always under development, improvements will come. Gmail is still listed as "beta" but when I first got it, it didn't have these features:

-labels
-Themes
-Pictures for contacts
-Connection to Google Calendar
-Connection to Google Docs
-Autopreview of pictures in emails
-Google Talk from inside the mailbox(with AIM integration)
-Web clips lines

So Android will improve, google the words "Android cupcake" to see what improvements we're looking forward to for the new year.

Thanks for your phenomenal response. My last question is if there is a way to search your call history/messages? I imagine the search function works for emails but how about everything else? I like the fact that on my WinMo phone when I start typing, it searches contacts and recent calls (incoming/outgoing). This is very convenient if you remember a part of a number from someone who called you like a month ago. While I understand that this feature probably isn't available, the search function would be nice.

The only search I'm finding in relation to contacts is very limited. I had the contacts app open and hit the "search" button on my keyboard and a little search box came up that said "search contacts" I noticed that this is ONLY for names, it does not seem looking at numbers, or email addresses in this area. For example, I live in the Chicago area, and 773 is one of the bigger area codes, but typing that into the contacts search box gets nothing. If you have the call log open, the search button takes you back to your contacts. Simply typing a number while in the call log is treated as though you're trying to dial a new number, it doesn't search.
