Call Proximity Sensor

I have the call proximity sensor ticked in call settings and the screen does come back on while on a call if I remove the phone from my ear.

But my question is if I have the call audio coming through the phones speaker with the speaker activated during that call the sensor doesn't work, and the light on the front screen turns off after the normal period that it does turn off like if you didn't have the sensor activated I mean.

Is this normal that the proximity sensor setting is disregarded when the phone is set to speaker mode?

That's exactly how mine works and I find it useful to turn the phone to speaker mode if I'm calling voicemail or anything else that requires tapping in a number. Otherwise every time I try and tap in the number the screen goes blank.
