Calling All Grammar Nazi's

Apparently, there's now a competition for the worst examples of bad grammar. They read some of the entries on the short list on the radio this morning and I have to say, I kinda struggled to spot the problem with some of 'em.

One of the speakers says,
"...what English grammar actually is. It's actually a plurality of grammars. There's a grammar for writing, there's a grammar for speaking. There's a grammar for broadcasting."

I disagree completely. He's talking about style, not grammar.

<edit> Perhaps he meant that the misuse of homonyms (they're, their, there) can only be applied to written language.

I'm not completely sure. In journalism, headlines are often long strings of nouns that don't make a grammatical sentence, such as:

HALLOWEEN BOMB SCARE STAMPEDE HORROR

To say it's grammatically incorrect is irrelevant, because in terms of language use by the press industry it is correct. So a different application of language will have different rules of usage, i.e. grammar. I'm just speculating mind.

I hate that basically no one these days knows that "per se" is the CORRECT version of "persay" at all times, and that persay ISN'T EVEN A REAL WORD> gah.

People don't connect. I don't think they realize that per se is Latin even if they took Latin in high school.

The Vulcan took 4 years of Latin, sees a word with a true Latin root, and asks what it means. He says it was no use then, and it's no use now.

What do they do with NB?

Wellz, me 2 kan hav guudly speellingz.

I haz all powars in hooole world and best in Engrishes!

Iz getz thiz on all testsss every time:

Is I best or what? :)

I am best whole world!

Pet peeves? Hmm. Oh, so many.
Apostrophe abuse
The wall of text with a single period at the end, if you're lucky
The poor tortured homonym and homophone
Using the wrong word, or the Panda (you made me laugh, and I think the Panda example now deserves its own name, rather like the Picard Maneuver).
Netspeak and leetspeak
Superfluous quotation marks (and while we're on the subject, using "quote" for "quotation")
Randomly turning nouns into verbs, e.g. access, gift, and reference

Lists where some items end with a period or other punctuation mark, yet other items end with nothing...

I like to irritate people with more 'proper' use of 'an'-- an hundred, an horrific travesty, et cetera.

I also have a tendency to use Latin phrases, much to the displeasure of spellcheck.

Just ran across this again online. The use of "outro" makes me grind my teeth. Is it just me?

I don't think it's a real word. I know it's used in music, but I think it's incorrect. I think the correct term is coda. I think that "outro" is one of those unwords coined by somebody who was too poorly educated to understand that "intro" is an abbreviation for the word "introduction," and assumed that if "intro" is a word, then "outro" must be a work with the opposite meaning.

I know that language is ever-evolving, but I object to the coining of new words just because the speaker is too lazy to figure out the "real" word for what he's trying to say.

Bonzo Dog Band - The Intro And The Outro. Perhaps that should be The Intro And The Coda?

Sure outro is in the dictionary now. It was in the predictive text of my phone. :p

The other day my dad said "more expensiver" made me chuckle knowing one of my friends truly despises the more + -er that often crops up in conversations.

I proclaim my crazy self as the EMPEROR of all Grammar NAZIS and NOT Grammar "Nazi's" because you people think you know how to spell the plural of "Nazis" but ya DON'T!!

You are lucky there was even an apostrophe in the word at all. Those that type on cell phones hate the things.
There is none in the word, but someone did make an attempt at punctuation. I've read some run on posts with NO punctuation so I'll give a slight hand for an attempt, however misguided.

Hey Stinky, do you want a teaching job in China?

Hey Stinky, do you want a teaching job in China?

:D

Well I have been thinking and I would seriously love to do something like that! :)

Wow those guys are well mannered! Wow I have noticed how very well mannered other cool dudes are from the Southern Eastern part of Asia generally speaking.

And this is NOT like the very ungrateful people around here... wow people around here are ungrateful... how sad.

The people around here are very ungrateful pretty much and our schools are littered with these kinds of people.

The so called "black kids" are very very ungrateful in SA because they think they can just do the absolute bare minimum but sadly they know they will still get into University with only like an abysmal 50% average or so.

My brother said he remembers a "student" in University who got in but only based on the simple fact that he is "Black" and connected. Only got like a 45% average... wow....
AND he got into medicine!!!!

OH....MY....GOD!

Wooooooooow

My brother said he was also a total arrogant bastard! Thinks he can do "anything" and is "entitled".... great stuff and "perfect" material for any profession!

I would NEVER trust him to operate on my body or let some one like that ever touch my body, that is for sure! Not even if you PAID me.

I still can't believe how well mannered many people from South East Asia are and actually really appreciate the opportunity they have to grow and learn.

For some strange reason we have had a lot of South Koreans at my work / school! :)

A lot!

They are all very well mannered!

Wow what a well mannered bunch in general. :)

The 1 that got almost got 100% in everything, used to almost lose it when he got something less than 90%!

Amazing!

:-D

Hmmm... but then I realised that... I think he took it a bit too far and used to be too hard on himself because when you have already done very well you should give yourself a pat on the back and not whip yourself because it is not flawless or 100%.

I think that was a bit too hard.

You can see for miles away there is a culture of perfection, efficiency and respect in their society.

All the ones we have had at my work at school have been very eager to be taught or educated. :)

And never mind the others! Some of them should not even bother to go and learn because they don't care!

The 1 Japanese student back a long time ago when I used to be in school had such a hard to pronounce name (both names) that everyone starting calling him just "Kenny" and I found out with a first hands on experience because his name was so hard to pronounce!

Good Lord that was a difficult name!

Very very good work ethic in general.

They all struggled with English but quickly adapted!

:-D

Hard working people. (Obviously in general from only what I have seen! ;))

Also goes for the Cantonese / Chinese people.

My old man had a guy from Beijing.

Even MORE hard working!

Sheesh!

That guy was incredible!

Like a machine!

Woooow I used to be quite the Grammar Nazi! :(

Whenever I used to correct people... they used to get a bit angry!

Phew I am glad I cooled it off with that and realised I wasn't making many friends back then! :D

Even though I really wanted to correct you I forced myself to not say anything!

Wow that was hard!

:-(

:D

bwhahahahaa!

those were some crazy nit picky days!

Wow I used to be nit picky hey!

xD

obama-imaginary-friends.jpg

You guys would have most probably screamed and finally cracked / freaked out from me "correcting you" every 5 seconds like I used to!

Okay okay I admit I really enjoyed it and yes... fine... I was looking for any kind of error but my friends started getting annoyed! :D

:)
