Help Camera app crashes EVERY time I open it.

Whenever I open the default camera app, the screen always gos crazy, and it looks like the scrambled porn channels on old school TV. Then it starts flashing green, before just freezing completely. None of the controls work, and it happens every time I open it. I know it's not a hardware problem, because Barcode Scanner and Camera Zoom FX both work just fine, with the latter only messing up when I swith to video mode, because it goes back to default Camera, then. Would it be possible to delete and reinstall the camera app? Would that fix my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I should also mention that my phone is rooted, but this was happening before I even rooted the phone.

Go to settings-> applications->manage applications;
Find the camera app, tap it, then click force stop, then clear data, and clear defaults.
Restart the phone and try again.

I regret to inform you that this did not, in fact, solve my problem. It's still doing the same thing that it was doing before... Do you have any other ideas on what it may be? I've searched google and couldn't find anybody else with my same problem, let alone a solution. How would I go about deleting and reinstalling the camera.apk? Do you think that would even help me?

Well, of course we could do that. But I was thinking it must be a setting issue somewhere that's causing it to act funny whenever it's opened. Hence the force stop and clear data steps.
If that did not work, before we go about reinstalling the camera apk, can you open the default gallery application just fine? And has the camera always been like that from day one?
Cause it might be a picture or video file somewhere that is corrupted, and every time you open the camera app, it tries to read it and crashes.

Now if you don't have any custom/user-added pictures on the phone and the default gallery app works just fine, than I guess the problem has to be the actual camera apk.
To reinstall that though, you will need superuser privileges, which implies rooting your phone.
So is your phone rooted and/or are you willing to give it superuser privileges in order to delete the camera.apk installed on the phone?
If so, check out the One-Click Root thread and root your phone, then once you can confirm that your phone is indeed rooted, let me know and I'll pm you a copy of my camera.apk, along with instructions on how to make it work. (hitting the install button may not work, I gotta do some research on that one first...).

Yes, my phone is rooted, as I mentioned in the first post; I do indeed have superuser privelages. And, yes, the gallery app works fine, and there are no corrupted files. I didn't buy the phone new, but it has been doing this since I bought it second-hand on Friday.

Also, thank you for your help, kind sir.

Edit: Never mind I just seen that its been happening before u rooted the phone so thats not it, srry. But I'll keep thinking for ya...

That's what it looks like. I was pointing the camera at a white wall with a chair in front of it. Sorry for the shitty pic.

It does that for a few seconds, before turning green and freezing. I can just press "home" to get out, but if I try to open Camera again, the whole phone freezes and I have to hold "power" for 5 seconds to restart the phone.

I very much would. How would I go about unistalling and reinstalling, though? I know it's not as simple as just pressing "install." Could you please send me a PM with the relevant information. Your help is very much appreciated.

I assume you are rooted. Move /system/app/camera.apk and /system/app/camera.odex to a temporary location for safe keeping. If you have root explorer you can hit "multi select" and highlight them then press ZIP to create a backup. Copy my files back to /system/app

Realize this is the original version of the camera app so you will not be able to turn off the GPS logging. Version EA29

Alright, just got home. I see ciper beat me to the punch.
Well, for what it's worth, my phone is updated already. So if the actual camera apk did change, you will find the GPS privacy setting in mine :p
in any case, you may use the same instructions posted by ciper with my files.
Also, do make sure that once all is said and done, the permissions for the files are rw-r--r-- (both files)
In other words:root (r/w); group (r), and others (r).
And remember to restart your phone before using the app.

I have no camera.odex. only camera.apk camerafirmware.apk and camerafirmware.odex. should I backup and move camerafirmware.apk/odex, as well, or are those ones staying put?

Edit: nevermind. I got it. You two are awesome! Thanks for the help.

Hmmm, ciper. Your thanks make me think that we had the same idea... So, does using my camera.apk give you the gps privacy setting?

I was planning to try removing my camera app in its entirety and replacing it with yours to test the theory but right now I'm trying to write the process for upgrading to Swype 3.0

When I put your camera appear in /system/Alps it didn't even show up in my applications. There was still a blank spot from when I deleted my old one. However, after I deleted that one and subsequently placed the EA29 one, it showed up and is now running flawlessly.

Edit: I don't know if I did anything wrong to cause this or not; there's, not a lot that you can mess up copy/pasting some files.

Restart the phone and try again.
wooooohooo thank you after weeks of havin this problem on my new fone and even takin it back to shop and havin everyone look at it and try fix it only to be told to ring samsung i just did this and it all fixed!! happy days

I have a rooted Galaxy Indulge also, and my camera shows a green screen when I try to use my camera as well. I tried to use your camera files and the camera never showed up. I did a factory reset and it still remains missing. I was surprised that I still had my custom start-up sound and custom shutdown animation and sound after a factory reset. Also none of the Metro PCS bloatware was back after doing a factory reset. Is there any way to get my phone back to exactly how it was when I bought it? Probably not, is there?

Odin it, use option 2 (R910 only)

I don't know what more I could tell you that isn't already in the thread, to be honest. Just read the first few posts carefully and I'm sure you'll be fine.

(just so you know, I had to Odin my R910 at one point due to needing to return it because it was defective, and it's pretty simple as long as you follow the directions exactly.)
