Help Camera Black Screen

Hello, I recently purchased an old Galaxy S from a friend of mine. It's a Samsung Galaxy S-Series SGH-i896 firmware Gingerbread 2.3.3. At first the camera was working fine, then one day I went to use it and all it displays is a blank screen. It still loads the camera app, but the viewfinder is completely black and when you attempt to take a picture nothing happens.

I never dropped the phone, treating it pretty well, so I don't believe it's a hardware problem. I have already attempted a "Factory Data Reset" from the Privacy menu to no avail. Then I found a tutorial telling me there is a way to update the firmware from the camera menu itself, but my phone seems to lack that option. When I click on "Manage Applications" button and select the "Camera" and "Camera Firmware" they both list 0.00B installed on every option (total, applications, data, cache). The camera version is 1.0 if that helps.

I am about at my wits end with this, any help would be appreciated.
