If you wanted to back up in the field, there were drives the size of compact flash ( no longer made). Also picture viewers that did have a lot of storage and were fairly small.
You also carried waterproof cases for your cards. Having all the backup with you is fine - but I don't think you'd want to deal with much if you had to hike to get a shot of Grizzlies doing their own thing, or pick up all the stuff if the Grizzly decided YOU were his thing. (Read too many of Moose Petersen's books)

There have been no large carnivores here since just after the arrival of humans forty to sixty thousand years ago (I wonder why?) and if you keep your wits about you most of the nasty bities are no problem. The more/bigger SDs works for me. That said, I did fill up my 16GB and both 8GB cards one morning recently and had to pull the 8GB card out of my Zoom recorder to keep going one morning recently...
 
Now, just for your info - I'm gonna watch part 2 of the geologic history of Australia on Nova. We were part of the same continent once. What a photo op!
