Camera improvement after Jelly Bean update?

Someone posted this in another thread:

"BTW the JB leak I'm running has improved the camera greatly. Focus and low light is better and before when I would take 5 of the same pic they would come out blurry or dark and 1 would be OK. Now all pics are good and some perfect. Now it still not up to par with the S3 but its pretty dam close lets just say the camera doesn't suck anymore and its a non issue."

This sounds very promising, has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!

I also saw this post and am intrigued as well. So much so that I registered into the forum. Is there anybody else that is running the Jelly Bean leaked version that has noticed an improvement in camera picture quality?

I'm ready to pull the trigger on getting the Maxx HD but reports of the camera having some of the same old quirks that my D2G's camera has is making me hesitate.

The guy in this video says the leak he's using didn't improve the camera. But it could be a different version than the other poster. He talks about the camera around 4:15:
Droid RAZR Maxx HD Jelly Bean - YouTube

Thanks for posting that. I will say that the reviewer didn't give a very thorough test of the camera. The lighting in that video was muted, probably to show off the screen on the Maxx HD. We don't know what the lighting was in his office when he said he moved the lens of the camera around and saw "noise sizzling in the viewfinder."

A couple of weeks ago I went to Verizon and tried the Maxx HD camera and the Galaxy S3 camera. The lighting was not bright, nor was it low light. The pictures with the S3 seemed a bit more saturated (or the Maxx was slightly washed out.) I tried to take shots of the area under the counter to get low light situations, but the darn tether they keep on the phones made it difficult. After doing this both cameras had grainy shots but if I enlarged the pictures the Maxx had more noise than the S3. I did not have any delayed shutter problem with the Maxx like the guy in your video link experienced. I would say the camera in the Maxx HD is a lot better than the one in my D2G, but not quite as good as the S3.

The main complaint I have with my D2G is what was mentioned in your OP, consistency. It seems the first shot with the D2G is darker than any subsequent shots, and low light performance is pretty bad. I didn't experience darker first shots with the Maxx HD.

I took some shots with the Maxx HD in the store today and they looked pretty good actually. Better than my Droid Incredible 1. And I like the camera interface and how fast the camera is ready to shoot. If this phone had wireless charging I would have already bought it!

Yes, the camera isn't as awful as some reviews are making it out to be.

Did you try Burst Mode? That setting causes the camera to take 4 rapid-fire shots. I figure if the problem with darker first shot or inconsistent shots occurs with the Maxx HD, just stick it in Burst Mode and you should be able to get at least one really good shot that works. (Shouldn't need to do this, but I offer it as a workaround.)

JB did not fix the non existent macro functionality. Such a senseless failing in this otherwise excellent phone. I downloaded third party camera apps and all of them will macro focus fine so it isn't hardware.

What third party app did you use?

Not noticing a difference here. If there is, it's pretty minor. But then again the camera is more than enough for me so I'm okay with it.

On the software side it feels like it takes much longer to take a picture with flash though.

According to reports related the the Razr M roll out of Jelly Bean there have been "several camera improvements" that will make taking photos "more quickly and easily". Apparently these improvements are the ability to control the volume level of the shutter tone and improved response time when taking photos.

I would assume any improvements on the Razr M's camera via Jelly Bean would also be done to the Razr HD/Maxx HD as well.

Ive Settled On "CameraICS". It has working Macro Focus And easy Exposure SettIngs. Its Free. Iv Tried The Pay Version And It Was Worse. Ive TesTed AbouT ten DifferenT Camera apps Including 3 Top Rated Pay Apps. While The Pay Apps Certainly Had More Features, CameraICS Was The Quickest To Macro Focus And Take Acceptable Pics. Damn, Swype Is Going Haywire On Me With the Caps.

Ps. Ive Got Android Camera 4.2 And Ive Not Installed It Because It Has Been Reported It Has More Fun Features, But Still Takes Pics That Look Like Ass On Our Phones.

Thanks for the Camera ICS suggestion. Just like my Nexus was. The default camera on the HD seemed laggy but this one works well.

Can someone do a test to see if your stock camera taking pictures in portrait oriantation opens in portrait or if it rotates them? I have been complaints from the family that they can not rotate the pictures I email them. Moto, and VZW can not help me.

Side note, if you take them in HDR or 6mp mode you can, but not on 8mp.
