I discovered the cause on my s2 prior to purchase of my s3. If you have the phone set to automatically rotate the display, and take a picture vertically, it will remain vertical in all displays (assuming you didn't slightly tilt the camera during the shot). If you do not have orientation set to automatically set to rotate the screen, all pictures will be in landscape format (initially). You will see the camera controls display vertically of horizontally likewise.I have the same problem when uploading to fb. Stinks that I have to tell my friends to hold their heads sideways.![]()

This was my experience. If may not be relevant to all.

This must be related to the other bug i reported about auto rotate. On other phones if you have auto rotate off YouTube and quickpic can still read the orientation sensor and rotate anyhow. On this phone it doesn't.
Camera app is probably also unable to read the sensor when auto rotate is off.
This is definitely a system bug.

I set up a Tasker profile so that when I start the Camera app Auto-Rotate gets turned on. When I exit the Camera, Auto-Rotate gets turned off. Works pretty good!
Samsung needs to make the camera ignore the Auto-Rotate setting, or at least give you an option to ignore it.
Strange that my Atrix never had this problem.
Also, when I uploaded photos to Meetup.com, a portrait photo showed up as landscape.
I thought the phones were supposed to know internally which orientation the phone was in when the picture was taken and save the picture in the appropriate format without relying on EXIF data.
Interesting. I never heard of a tasker profile. Could you give a step-by-step on how to do this?
QuickPic seems to show the correctly, but still random orientation when I email, MMS, or upload to FB/Dropbox... ANNOYING!
