OK, maybe I'm missing something...
When in the camera app, I can press the power/standby button to get a 'lock' icon on the camera. It's function: nothing on the screen responds to touches (i.e. I can't take a photo), the only thing working is the home button.
If I press the standby button again so that the lock icon disappears, I can operate the camera, but the navigation buttons do not respond to presses.
So, basically, I have to 'lock' the camera to be able to exit the app, by pressing the home button (had a couple of reboots before I saw the icon and figured it out).
What's the point of this!!?!??
