Camera speed

So...I thought a major selling point of ICS was the instant snap feature of the phone camera.

When the Nexus launched, I went to check it out, and was truly amazed.

The S3 camera is supposedly light years ahead of the nexus lens, yet it takes SLOOOOW pictures. I just tried it out, and I am NOT pleased. The camera is one of the major selling things for me. I want that instant snap picture camera like the Nexus has. And this was supposed to be true for all ICS devices.

Am I missing something? Supposed to pick up my preorder tomorrow...but after seeing this, I may skip the S3 all together. =(

My S3 takes pictures almost too quickly. Its lightning fast.

mine *takes* a pic almost instantaneously.. but focusing is not fast at all, it's slower than my Note by a half second or so.

Mine is extremely fast. In almost an ironic way it's actually hard to get used to coming from the Incredible. It focuses right in and snaps before I even have given the image in the viewfinder a good look, as soon as I touch the button (sometimes on accident). It's very, very fast.

You can record video AND take a bunch of still photos with no freeze... This phones quite good at quality too... Iphones got some competition here, the screen is so much bigger too it's perfect for gaming!

I was just taking pics of my dog up close. This camera is amazing! The pictures are beautiful and crystal clear. Zooming in on the pics you lose no resolution at all. I think I've finally hit the jackpot with a camera phone. Amazing!

Another post praising the camera from me... Really fast, really good quality, no slowdowns. Maybe the one you played with is a dud?

When the camera is set to flash off, it will take instant pics.

But let's be honest. If you're indoors, and taking pics without the flash, they don't turn out very good.

Mine is really fast also..... Quick threadjack....

Is there a setting to turn on the voice control for the camera? Cant find it.

Saying shoot or smile doesnt seem to do anything..

Settings > Language and input > Voice cmd for apps :)

and when you have the camera open, is that what the little pic of the head means that is on the screen along the top to the right? If so then are there words I can say that will take a pic for me then??? thanks

correct. Shoot or smile or cheese should all work

You're partly right in my experience.

When using the flash, the S3 takes pics very slow. With flash off, it's fast.

However, "good" is relative.

The phone was a big reason I bought this phone and to be honest, I'm not impressed at all. My wife's iPhone is way faster and takes significantly better pics and vids. That said, I like just about everything else better on the S3 than on the iPhone.

I'm wondering if there are any third party apps to improve the camera quality.

I came from an ERIS so to me the camera is spectacular. I see what you mean about the flash, it shines like a spotlight for a sec while it focuses then it flashes and takes the pic. I'm sure if I fidget with the settings a bit that could be faster but may sacrifice quality. all in all though its great.

On my digital camera, you can hold the shutter halfway down to get the auto-focus and shutter speed set to where you're aiming to get the exposure right, then move the camera to center the pic where you want before pressing all the way and taking the picture.

I've never been able to figure out how to do this on a phone. Is there a way to do this on the S3?

The "zero shutter lag" Samsung talks about is when the camera actually takes the photo. And you can notice when it actually snaps a photo, you sometimes miss it actually took a photo. Now adding flash and other things are going to slow down your process yes. You want the camera to auto focus and get flash going. If that was all instant it would take crap pictures. You think flash, auto focus, and a snap of the picture is all going to happen in less then a second? Haha tell me a phone camera that can do that please.

I haven't experimented, but the Anti-Shake setting may also influence how quickly a photo is taken as well. Likely quicker with that feature turned off.

If you haven't already, experiment with the best shot feature which snaps 8(?) pictures in quick succession and lets you pick the best. Very cool.

There's no doubt, this camera is really fast, instantaneous. But, thats processing speed on the module itself. When I think 'fast camera', I'm usually thinking aperture or shutter. Indoors, you can certainly amass a ton of blurry-mess photos in a blink of an eye. :/
