Can a website slow down a low-end device?

Hello guys!

I noticed that when I visit some websites using every kind of browser (even opera mini) the phone starts to be slow and laggy. This happens also when a simple app shows an animated advertisement: the phone starts to be laggy for 6-7 seconds and many processes (like maps, viber, etc) restarting on their own, and of course I don't use any task killer. Why? Is normal for a low-end device like an Acer Liquid Metal nowadays? Just for info I'm running cyanogenmod 7 (unofficial porting). Thank you in advance!

I forgot to say that the kind of websites which slow down my phone they all have animated stuff.. Is it normal for a low-end device nowadays? Please help me to remove all the doubts and then I accept the fact that my phone is too old (or better, not supported by Acer anymore). Thanks

This is an example

For very bad web design...

Not good, even on my quad core desktop PC with 4GB of RAM, on a T3 connection!

Anyway...results on my Venture:
  • Stock browser: Seems ok. Too tiny to read without zooming.
  • Opera Mini: Doesn't load/display right.
  • Opera Classic: Takes forever to load. Seems tolerable once loaded. Too tiny to read without zooming.
  • Boat Browser: Takes forever to load. Response more laggy than stock browser. Too tiny to read without zooming.
  • Naked Browser: Hangs at 49% loaded, then continues. Text is zoomed appropriately but background is covered or missing. Somewhat laggy response to interaction.

Results on iPad3:
  • Safari: Runs better than anything.
  • Opera Mini: Takes forever+1 to load. Doesn't display background pics. Somewhat laggy response to interaction.

Thank you very much for your test! So it was not very good to your low-end device too. But just another question: did you notice any lag in your phone (e.g homescreen) after you closed the browser? Because at that moment I quickly went into settings and I discovered that some apps crashed and were restarting by themselves... and of course this fact causes me lag
