can an android tablet do all these things?

Hi

after briefly playing with a mates ipad and having to put up with the awful sound on the tv entertainment on a 12 hr each way flight recently I am considering a tablet of some description, ideally however around the

I don't know what the money conversion is but the Acer Iconia (~$350 US)can do all that. I think someone recently did a movie test on one and it went 7+ hours with the screen at 50% brightness. It has a built in USB host port (external HDD connection), a Micro SD slot and an HDMI out (720p I think). The Clear.Fi software (the only software I mention that is ONLY on the Acer tablets) allows streaming from media shared on the network, it works well until you skip forward then the buffering is a bit slow if it's an HD video.

For controlling the PC, SplashTop is good, I have it and use it from my laptop and my Iconia, to control a desktop in the other room. That would fit those needs once you get the hang of it. I don't know if it's available where you are, the streamer app for the desktop is free, the version to connect to it from another Windows PC is free, the Android version is a pay app.

Acer has some updated models coming out, if a 10" tablet is too big, consider one of the 7" ones for less money.

thanks for the info mplevy, I am not so bothered about acually streaming from my network to my tab, but that splashtop software sounds exactly what i would want for controling my pc needs, so i shall look into that now.

thanks again and any other thoughts on different tablets in the

I have an Acer Iconia, and it's great. The only thing it can't do that you list above is swap out the battery. If you want an Android tablet whose battery can be swapped out, check out the Toshiba Thrive. It's very similar to the Iconia.

Note that there will soon be a new generation of tablets coming out (Android + iPad). If you can wait a couple of months, you'll get much better hardware.

thanks for the advice. The battery swapping is not an issue so long as i can get 6hrs+ of movie use out of it so that is fine.

i guess I *could* wait but then summat new is always round the corner. some of the new existing tabs easily look powerful enough for my needs, so I guess i would still buy the same tech in 3 months, but just save a few quid.

Am really tempted with the achos 101g9 it looks cheap and nice. i still need to look at that Iconi though

Edit, just looked at the specs on the new Iconia and it looks really good. I think i may get this over the archos.
