Can Android "devices" tether with Symbian phones?

I currently have a Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t, which is a convertible tablet. I have Ubuntu installed on it, and I use it in airports, hotels, on the move etc.

I also have a Nokia e72, which runs on AT&T, and I have unlimited 3.5G data on it.

And quite often, I am online on the Ideapad using my Nokia's connection. I can use both USB and Bluetooth to tether from the cell to my laptop.

My question, can Android do that? If so, on which device?

I have searched a lot on this issue, and almost EVERY single answer says "Install Joikuspot". That is NOT a complete solution . Installing Joikuspot makes the phone really really hot, and the battery is dead in an EXTREMELY short time. Whereas when I plug in the USB, it actually charges the cell phone.

I repeat, I do not want to install Joikuspot and convert my cell into a WIFI hot spot. I want to be able to tether using my cell either as a USB modem, or a Bluetooth modem.

Is it possible?

My Android phone already has the ability to be a WiFi hotspot. From my experience, I do not find my phone overheats when I do this. I haven't tried with BT or USB as the WiFi hotspot capability is more convenient.

In short, yes they can. You have to pay your carrier for the hot spot service. Usually around 20 bucks a month for 2 gig. Unless you cheat an root your phone.

Install Joikuspot? Android does not have Joikuspot, unless you plan on tethering your Symbian phone to Android device, which you can't. Android can't connect to a Symbian hotspot because Android by default can't connect to ad-hoc networks which Symbian creates. Nor can you tether via cable to an Android device using a Nokia phone.

Actually, I read somewhere that you CAN make android connect to ad-hoc, but it requires rooting and manual installation of drivers which I'm not an expert on and seems rather risky IMO.

I know about Joikuspot, my question was whether a Android "tablet" (NOT a phone) can tether with a Nokia "phone" using either of Bluetooth or cable .. which I guess it can't ... I am planning on getting a Transformer Prime, and I don't want to spend money on a 3G connection for the Transformer Prime, since I already have unlimited 3.5G on my Nokia .. I was looking for a way of using my Nokia's 3.5G on my Transformer Prime without resorting to Joikuspot

My jailbroken iPod Touch has an app called iBluever that tethers to my Nokia phone .. I was just wondering if there was an equivalent of that, which I guess there is not ..

Either that, or I am asking in the wrong forums ....

I recommend that you also ask on Nokia forums. I recommend allaboutsymbian.com. There is also a forum on the Nokia web site as well.

Since you are planning to get a Transformer Prime, I also recommend you ask in the Transformer Prime forum as well. You will find there are forums to specific devices. The specific tablets are listed below the specific phones from the Android Forums main page.

FWIW, I also have/had an E72/N900 (and joiku spot) on AT&T unlimited "MediaNet" (will fight tooth and nail to keep it). If you want an alternative solution, I just got a T-Moblile branded Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, which supports AT&T's HSPA network (hit 5.9Mbps at home). No texts regarding plan changes after a week, vs. the one I got "as soon as my att branded Moto Q registered on the network", after downgrading to MediaNet.

I started a thread in the AT&T forum regarding unlocked/T-Mobile branded phones which support Att 3G if it helps.

Ah, someone who thinks like me. I have the unlimited MediaNet from AT&T for my e72 too, and I am guessing you don't have a SIM in the N900, and just use it as a secondary device? I use my linux netbook that way.

That's interesting. Doesn't T mobile use 1700 for its UMTS and AT&T use 850/1900?

Can you link me to that please?

I actually still have both AT&T and T-Mo...72 was on AT&T, 900 on T-Mo...until it got wet (LCD backlight went out, but crystals still visible).

There are some T-Mo branded phones which have the 850 and/or 1900 radios for AT&T UMTS support, in addition to their 1700/2100 (supposedly you need both...1700 for down, 2100 for up for T-Mo 3G). I currently have a T-Mo branded Motorola Defy on AT&T, which supposedly has only the 850 band but has full UMTS functionality for calls/data (cough.hotspot.cough), a does my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, which may only have 1900...using Sensation 4G as main phone on T-Mo. FWIW, N900 has full "4G" support on T-Mo's $10/mo. "web2go" plan.

I'm trying to see if the T-Mo Springboard does as well, as T-Mo website claims (not always correct), but they won't give me another unlock code for 90 days.
