Can android function without Google?

This is theoretical question, I know. Is there anyone here that has completely cleaned out every last apk related to Google. At a point a person has just the right apps doing just the right thing and doesn't need to do anymore downloading. Samsung apps do the same thing as Google apps, so that wouldn't be a problem either. Would the phone be much faster? Does anyone with Android live completely apart from Google Apps/services?

Hi

If you dont use any google services I suppose its possible. But if you really dont like google, why buy a phone which uses an OS created by google? It would be like buying an iphone and not having an apple account.

Sure you could live without Google-server based apps on your phone but I don't think it would speed up your phone AT ALL. I also don't think that there's any way to delete your Gmail account from your phone (though you could completely remove any data from it and otherwise abandon it, leaving it as an empty shell).

Personally, I'd hate to live without:
* Google Play Store (though Amazon apps store might suffice), and
* Google Maps/Navigation, and especially Waze (which is owned by Google).
* (I'd slightly miss YouTube.)

Otherwise, you could easily live without Google's services. For example,
* I uninstalled Google's Music app replaced it with MediaMonkey.
* I have no interest in Google+, Hangouts, etc. so they don't exist on my phone.
* You can replace Google Search with Yahoo, Bing, et al.
* You can use Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, et al, with their apps or a stock email app instead of Gmail.
* You can use Hotmail to sync your contacts with your PC, Outlook, and keep them away from Google. (I do.)
* You can use OneDrive, Box, et al, instead of Google Drive.
* You can install an alternative browser, like Dolphin.

You'd still have a fully functional phone that would arguably be superior to iPhones, Blackberries, et al.

Does anyone with Android live without Google? Yeh I know plenty of people that do that, along with very much the entire population of China. So we are using things like Samsung apps, along with Baidu and Tencent and Alibaba instead.

I had a Chinese Coby tablet - no Google -and had to use Amazon. It worked.
I don't need digital maps and navigation except star charts. I prefer printed maps.

Often see western tourists with printed maps trying to find their ways around Beijing, Google maps on their phones doesn't work because it's blocked, unless using a VPN.

Except for some Play apps, I don't need Google at all. Some I can repurchase from Amazon. 2 Gmail accounts are just spam traps.

I have an older phone.. however when I rooted my phone I was able to uninstall everything except (for some reason) google music player service.

When I did that, my phone would not start. I did this about 3 times until I narrowed it down to that one single service. So my phone (LG Motion) did not run without google. -_-

Late answer I know but may help someone. I ran my previous handset, Huawei y300, Google free. Installed a custom rom but no gapps. Definitely ran quicker without play services eating the ram! Used aptoide and f-droid for apps, k9 mail for Gmail, and nip location from f-droid in place of Google location services. Phone worked better than ever being a low ram device, even battery life improved!

Ok, that sounds quite interesting, never thought that this is possible, also life of the battery changed and improved?
A surpise!
