Can anyone help me find Hero firmware?

Lurker
Hi All, Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I've scoured the forum (and the wider web) and am no wiser.

I have an old HTC Hero locked to the UK Orange network. I want to give it to my friend to use on a different network.

I bought an unlock code, but it does not work. I have read that the unlock code should work OK if I upgrade the phone's firmware to version 2.73.61.66.

Right now the phone has 2.73.61.5.

There are lots of features online (from around 2010) suggesting downloading the update from the HTC site. But the links are out of date - HTC do not even mention the Hero on their site any more.

Will I find an archive of firmware out on the web anywhere? Neither Orange or HTC seem to care about this phone any more. I hope asking this does not break any forum rules, but I'm really stuck...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Carrier branded firmware files can be relatively difficult to find unfortunately.

However, head here: [ROM] Official HTC Hero RUU ROM + Radio Links - xda-developers

About halfway down the post is what appears to be a working download link. :)

Download the program, boot your phone in to fastboot, disable HTC Sync, connect the phone to the PC and run the exe file. It will wipe the phone clean and install the complete OS from scratch.

Regardless of firmware, Orange should (and legally have to) unlock the phone for you no problem. They may charge a premium for it, but they should still be capable.

Senor Presidente - thankyou! I'd searched high & low but had not found that site. I'll bookmark it for future reference & will have a go at updating right now.

Cheers!
