I notice on two occasions that two of my app icons (USA Today / MMAjunkie)
lights up on my home screen and the label at the bottom starts scrolling.
What is this?

Havent seen that yet. Maybe an update or a news flash ?

By "label at the bottom" you don't mean a scrolling banner ad, do you? Perhaps they're pushing ads to your phone through those widgets.
