Help Can battery drain cause by hardware problem?

I have done everything suggested by other users here to stop battery drain, turned off everything such as data, wifi, 3g, auto sync, etc., made sure no apps are running in the background. Still the brand new oem battery drains to nothing in 2 1/2 hour with no phone usage, just idling.

I'm aware that almost all battery drain problems are software related. I'm wondering if my problem is hardware related. Has there ever been cases where battery drain was caused by a hardware problem?

I recently acquired this Inc2 and it's rooted and has MIUI on it. Will a factory reset get rid of the battery drain problem?

check out the app "Gsam battery monitor" it can tell you what apps are waking the phone, if any.
