Can I change my phone number on a rooted phone for Sprint

My phone is rooted and I'm running a custom rom but I want to change my phone number. When I called Sprint to change the number they wanted to program the new number but it did not do anything when I put the ## then the number then # edit did not come up. So my question is do I need to go back to stock on my sprint phone to change to a new phone?

You will have to restore your Stock Rom, then you can convert back, make a Nandroid first
