I would first make a backup in CWM to recover with before flashing this zip with CWM.. it says its for all ROMs.. not sure it will work, but if you want to try it.. that is your best route... that way you have something to fall back on in case it makes your phone behave funky..

I flashed it but couldn't tell a difference with performance. But it didnt break my phone or anything. How could I test performance changes?

Yeah, it's not so much the CM7 as the kernel, since init.d scripts are executed in the init.rc (which is stored in the kernel's ramdisk).
