Help Can I reprogram my phone? (look for new towers)?

My phone is having some issues and it would work fine, then a few minutes later it has no service.
My friend said that he can call *228 and it will look for new towers to connect to. (he has verizon)
can I do that with my phone?? If so, how can I do it?

Same thing, just dial it like you would a phone number and listen to the instructions.
