Can I upgrade the Android version?

As I read around on forums online I have a curious thought that I am unsure can be done. Can my Boost Mobile Android 4.1.2 GC01 Galaxy S2 SPH-D710 be upgraded to a more recent version of the Android operating system? I'm not quite aware of the ROMs and abilities of rooting.

Yep, it won't be TouchWiz, but I'm running 4.3 now

As of right now I have a working and rooted S2 thanks to everybody here. Just working on trying to figure out why pie/LMT won't respond to any gestures
