Can I use a yahoo account instead of google account?

I want to get move away from iphone and go to the HTC one when my iphone contract ends and I am wondering if there's anyway to login to yahoo without using a google account for google playstore. I mean we don't have to use a specialize itunes account to use itunes but for google playstore you need a google account what's up with that. Isn't android suppose to be less strict if so why can't I use my yahoo instead of my gmail account?

Are you sure you don't need an apple account to buy stuff from the app store/iTunes - all iOS devices I've used have wanted apple account credentials to install apps, even free ones.

This isn't even really about Android: it's the Google Play Store, so you need a Google account to access it. It's the same as you'd use an Amazon account for Amazon, etc. You can use the phone without a Google account (just don't enter one), but then you don't have access to the Play Store.

Of course you can create a Google account for that purpose and use it for nothing else (or just that plus contacts backup, if you choose to sync contacts). Many do this. My only advice if you do this is to make a note of the account and password, as people who don't use it otherwise and hence only enter these credentials once sometimes forget them, which is awkward if you ever need to re-enter them (e.g. upgrade the phone or do a reset).

There's nothing that says you have to use Google for your email though - you can use Yahoo for that perfectly well.

Sorry if I've misunderstood though: I don't use Yahoo myself, so may have missed something.

Amazon has it. It's free.

You can also use your browser. I can get Yahoo mail using Boat Browser in Desktop mode.

I'd read the TOS before using Yahoo. They are messing around with Mail, Flickr, you name it. You might not like the new policies.

You need a google account to activate your device the first time you boot it up. Which basically means you need a free gmail account. But there is no reason why you need to keep using that account. Once you activate the phone, you can just set gmail to not send you notifications and I don't think you will even remember that you have a google related account (although note account info as cautioned above).

As mentioned above, you can use your yahoo account via the yahoo mail app. yahoo mail, messenger and even yahoo search are available in the Amazon app store (the app of which you download from Amazon).

So, unlike apple you have choices. Because, as also mentioned above. you can NOT use the apple store without an apple account. Your sign in name at your apple account may be your yahoo mail address, but it is an apple account you are signing into

Actually this isn't 100% accurate. On newer versions of Android (Gingerbread + I believe) you can completely skip the Google activation. However, you won't have access to any of the Google features and apps, this includes Google Play, maps, and other apps.

Thanks! I had no idea. I guess I never saw a reason to try to skip the google account set up.

What I mean is you need a google account to activate the phone and probably for the playstore On the iphone you can use any email you wish to buy from app store. I want the purchase apps I buy to be located on my yahoo account not my gmail because I barely use that gmail as gmail is not important to me.

No. You don't need a Google account to activate an Android phone. As stated above, recent versions of Android allow you to skip specifying a Google account.

Yes. You can use any email you want with your Apple account, but you still must have an Apple account to buy from iTunes.

When creating a new Google account, most people choose to create a new Gmail account at the same time, and associate this two accounts, but it's not required. You can use any email address you choose when creating a new Google account.

But my purchases only will go under my gmail account. I want it under my yahoo account like at the apple app store. I put my email as my user id and all I just have to concentrate on my yahoo account no need to go to other email address. I hope you get what I am saying.

I don't think that he understands his user name is his apple account name. Thus he has two accounts:

1) yahoo account (yahoo name and yahoo password) that receives email and has nothing to do with apple and exists on yahoo servers
2) an apple account (yahoo email as account name and hopefully a different password than his yahoo account) that has nothing to do with yahoo and exists on apple's servers and allows him to use and buy from apple tunes

The yahoo account has something to do with the app store other wise without no email you can not create a apple id which android it only lets you use a gmail for google play store, it won't let you change your id like apple if you get what I am saying. I use my yahoo a lot so I put my yahoo as my apple id and don't have to worry bout checking another email I don't use that much. I hope you getting what I am saying.

This is not possible. You must have a Google account to make purchases/download apps from Google play. There is absolutely no other way.

The only email you'll be sent from the Play Store is confirmations of payments (eg if you buy paid apps - you don't get any mail from installing free ones).

You could just set the gmail to auto-forward everything to your Yahoo account. Would that solve it for you?

In the plus side, when you do buy something from the Play Store you do get the email receipt immediately. In my experience if I buy stuff through iTunes or the App Store I get the email several days later!

True that.

apple store seems to fall into three categories with receipts:
- within the hour
- same day (but later) delivery
- we asked siri to do it (generally arrives a few days later)
