Root Can I Use Just Any Ol' Splash Screen?

OK, so the title says it all pretty much. My question is basic and that the Verizon splash screen is slow when it comes up and I don't like it. I am running the stable Nos m7 sense 5.0 Jelly Bean 4.3 Rom. So if i just pick a splash screen at random will it work? And is it just a zip file that i flash from the boot loader? I use TWRP recovery.

Look in /system/media. If there's a file named bootanimation.zip, you can replace it with any other boot animation file you want. (Try using one designed for the size and density of screen you have or it might look weird.) There are thousands of boot animation zip files floating around the internet in all sorts of screen sizes.

Where am i looking on my phone to find that /system/media? Boot loader I'm assuming? And it is just a simple flash it like I would a Rom? Or do I have to flash it a certain way? I want to be sure on this as I haven't flashed something specifically before. Just Roms.

you are using a root file manager(i use root explorer) within the booted OS to look for the boot animation file. just open the file manager and navigate to system, then media, and so on.

you will then remove or rename the bootanimation.zip, and replace with the one you want to use. it will have to be named exactly the same as the vzw one you remove, wich should have vzw or verizon in its name. you mak find a "backup" boot animation file there as well, without the vzw name, wich will run if the other file is not found.

just keep in mind that the slow boot animation is an effect, not a cause. changing the boot animation will not make the phone boot any faster ;)

hope that helps :)

Scotty I couldn't find it the way you said so I used the search option to get to it. I use es file explorer, which is what came with the Rom I'm using. And I'm not looking for faster boot up time, my issue is the boot up image is in slow motion. I don't like it and besides it's just the word Verizon and logo on a white screen. I'm going to watch some videos on you tube about how to change the boot image and sound so that I can see it done first. I can't picture what to change by reading what to do. That's my learning curve.

Scotty, anyone....please help? I thought rather than moving files around and what not that since I found this app for boot animations that makes it easy I would use that. All was well until I rebooted my phone and saw that the animations were SUPER SMALL! So I deleted the app and all the animations I had put on my phone to switch between. I have downloaded a new one from a proven dev and tried to flash it. It says successful on the flash but it won't show on reboot, it's still the last one I flashed from the other app. I'm watching another proven dev's youtube video on how to manually change the boot animation and see if I use his boot animation if it will work out right.

I'm trying everything I can here and I'm coming up empty on how to get this fixed. I did what I said I was going to do, watch youtube videos until I was good with trying this. It seems simple enough to do and I just can't seem to figure it out! (sigh) Grr..... Thanks in advance everyone.

Sorry coyotes,Not sure what to tell you. Only way I know to fix is to navigate using a root file manager to wherever the file is located and manually delete the ones you don't want, and add/rename the one you do want. A quick look in my one vx found "ATT_bootanimation.zip" in system/customize/resource. Check there and see if you can find your animations.

I also found one named htc_boot_up.zip,so I renamed "ATT_bootanimation.zip" to "ATT_bootanimation.piz" and voila now its a very generic animation when booting.

In an absolute worse case you can get everything back to stock to start fresh with animation mods by simply reflashing your Rom. Wipe cache and dalvik, but not data and you won't have to set everything up(but always make a backup just in case ;))

Well I already deleted the ones I didn't want by doing what you said. I deleted the app too and thought without the other animations even betting on my phone that it would go back to the one that came with the Rom. I was wrong, it stayed on the last crappy one I tried. But, I did reinstall the app and found one that worked that I actually like. So I guess for now I'm ok. At the same time though, I found the animations that came with the Rom and tried to flash them but it didn't work. Do I have to rename them instead since I changed things around? I'm thinking that's the only choice I have left since I've done everything else. And my next step was going to be to try theming or trying some themes out, but since I don't have a full grasp on boot animations yet I think I'll hold off. Lol Or at least I think I should at least for a bit.

the boot animations must be properly named in your system/customize/resource folder.

the phone, being a vzw variant will look first for whatever the file was originally named, wich was prolly VZW_bootanimation.zip or something along those lines.

if you delete or rename that folder(thus making it invisible to the phone),as i did above, then the phone will look for a default file, wich will be named something more generic,htc_boot_up.zip in my case above. if there are more than one default animation files,im not sure how the phone will select the one it uses.

the factor in question is wether or not the file you flashed was set up correctly to place the boot animation in the right spot(system/customize/resource in my case) and wether it named the file correctly to be the phones first choice.

so in a nutshell, you just need to:
-make sure the file you want is in the right place(system/customize/resource if its the same as mine, you never mentioned if this is where you found them)
-make sure the file is named the exact same as your stock boot animation,or possibly name it generically and make sure its the only boot animation file present.

hope that helps :)

So, I had renamed the file. I didn't have it in the right spot so to say. I had it in another file that a you tube video I watched had told me to put it. It was one or the other place I could put it. Anyways, I had an issue of being denied to place the file. in the spot you said. I had to change something in es file explorer before I could move it where it needed to go.

I haven't restarted my phone yet to find out if it works yet. But I downloaded the app again and picked a boot animation that I knew would work right. It's the cm10 one. Not what I wanted but it works and makes my phone different and that's what I wanted to begin with. I appreciate your help Scotty. As always you are right on when help is needed. Perhaps it's closer to time to mess with theming now.

I have searched on here for help with theming and even with a specific search for help on it, it comes up as general results. I'll search again later I guess.

Yeah, so just an update. I restarted my phone and the changed file name didn't take so to say. It still does the cm10 bout animation. I'm guessing I have to delete it and the app again?

It should not matter if you delete the app. You don't neccessarily have to delete the animation, but you may need to rename it. The fact that the phone is using it seems to indicate that either:
1) you do not have an animation in the correct file location, named correctly for the phone to make it the number one choice to use

2) you possibly have 2 correctly named files in the correct location, and the cm10 file is the one it finds first. If this is the case, rename or delete the cm10 animation file and you should be good to go. :)

I'll go try and mess with it to see what's going on. Honestly the only zip boot animation file in the location you told me to put it is the file I've been trying to use the whole time. I'll have to look in other spots to find the others.

I'd have to download the ROM again in order to do that. It was taking up a huge amount of space so once I found out it was ok to get rid of it I blasted it off of my phone. It's not a big deal to do it again, I just thought I would mention it.
