I love this too much, but can it be turned off to perserve battery or is it just the system itself?

Sounds like you got yourself a heating pad...I never turn my phone save for rebooting after a glitch or something went wrong. You might save a little bit of battery, but if anything you will create more wear and tear on the processor by turning it on and off all the time which in turn drains the battery a tad.
nope never runs hot or even warm. all my devices have been fine. and i'm a power user so i stream, watch youtube, play games as well as emails, texts and calls......never really seen a decrease in battery life. i mean some days are better than others in terms of battery consumption thru out the day. of course i never keep my device long term. i usually upgrade every 2 or 3 years.Sounds like you got yourself a heating pad...
