Help Can make calls and text but wont connect to browser!!

I bought this phone off ebay a few days ago. Just received it today. Obviously brand new and in all the original packaging and was never opened. I transferred cards and it works great! I can make and receive phone calls and also text. Wifi works great. However, when I disconnect from wifi, I can't use any apps that require a data connection or the browser. Does anyone know what could be wrong? We pay for a data plan, and the browser and email it worked fine on my HTC Inspire, so I can't imagine would would be wrong. Help!
 
I figured it out. The ATT people FINALLY answered my call.

Here, ATT bought out Alltel. We were grandfathered in on our Alltel plans (unlimited data, tons of minutes). Apparently the old Alltel plans only support 3G phones. So if you want to use a 4G phone, you have to get a completely new plan with ATT and purchase the 4G data plan which is totally bogus. I love the phones, but I hate ATT. Now I'm wondering what to do with this phone. Do I talk my husband into signing on with ATT or do I sell this phone and get something that's 3G. Decisions decisions…. I really love this phone too! Ugh!
 
I had an unlimited 3g plan and when i got a 4g phone it became an unlimited 4g data plan. Once you have unlimited smartphone data plan you keep it unless you cancel it. So I would think since your alltel unltd plan was grandfathered in then they should have let you switch to the unltd 4g plan
