Can nexus 7 readmisi

I have a nexus 7 with an otg cable
I only can read or import pictures

Is there any (free) way todo read any kind of files? Should i wait 4 an update?

I'd guess kabeza is asking how to get random files (example.abc) off the USB key.

I don't use Nexus media Importer, but I think it copies the file to the Downloads folder then attempts to play it. With unrecognised file types you might find it in the Downloads folder even though Android couldn't "play" it.

No, it reads them in situ and only copies them if you tell it to by pressing the "save" icon.

It shows all files as long as you put it in "advanced" view rather than the default "tabbed", the latter showing only filtered types like pictures/docs/etc.

You need root access. Install the free Stickmount from the Play market. With an OTG Usb cable you can now read/write to external storage. Astro or Root Explorer can navigate you to /Sdcard/Usbstorage/sd?1 where ? is a letter a,b,c, etc. With the JB4.2 update, the process is a little more tricky. You may have to mount/unmount/mount a few times to get the external storage recognized.

why do they make things more difficult? PS: not sure about rooting, so I guess I'll keep it as it is

You can use Nexus Media Importer if you don;t want to root,

Or you can root it and get unrestricted access to the external storage.
