Short answer - no. Long answer - because in most cases, one CDMA carrier's phone can't be used on another CDMA carrier's system (and Canada is all GSM anyway, AFAIK).

you can but it will be considered roaming and you need a cash balance from what i remember from my trip last year

Probably the only way this would work is if you had it flashed over to a Canada CDMA carrier, even then if you had success, there's no guarantee everything would work.

Your best option would be buying an unlocked device if you travel out of the country a good bit so you could swap out Sims.

I drive to Niagara Falls and Toronto a few times a year... you can get a signal just fine. Sign up for Canadian roaming for free texting and cheap calls. Data will kill you though.
