Can tethering convert 3G network to Wi-Fi?

Hi, I will be staying at a hotel near SF airport for 3 days. Not feeling to shell out $15 a day for slow Wi-Fi. I was wondering whether tethering on Triumph will accomplish what I need:

1) If I tether on VM 3G network, will my Wi-Fi-only laptop be able to receive connection? Can tethering convert 3G to Wi-Fi?

2) If so, what's the easiest way to tether? I have a stock MT btw. I don't mind paying for app that makes this process easy.

3) Anyone staying at SF Airport know how good the VM 3G network is? :)

Tethering is actually easy on our phone. All you need is to be rooted or running a custom rom like Cm7 or MIUI. Once you are rooted download an app like Tethering for root users from the play store.

So I take it that tethering can convert 3G to Wi-Fi? Or is it called Wi-Fi hotspot? Sorry, I am confused with the terms.

Don't overthink it, all that you're doing is tethering your phone's 3G with your laptop over Wi-Fi. So in a sense, you could call it converting 3g to Wi-Fi.

Thanks.

I find in the Play Store "ClockworkMod Tether (no root)"...does this app work well with our phone? I read somewhere that some tethering apps don't work well with Motorola Triumph.

I am a bit against rooting my phone (time consuming). Stability is also something I am not willing to compromise. Is there an app that work well with stock MT?

Tethering and wifi hotspots are one in the same. Tethering refers to all ways of getting 3g from your phone to another device, while wifi hotspots or wifi tethering refer to ususing wifi to achieve the same thing. Honestly, you'll have an easier time tethering while rooted and since it literally takes a minute to do it I don't see how it can be time consuming.

Allright, I will following the root guide tonite.

One last question before I let you guys off the hook :D

We will have 2-3 laptops/devices in the hotel room, does tethering only work on the laptop/device attached (USB) to the phone? If it works on other laptop/device wirelessly, is there a special software need be installed on laptop/device?

Sorry if my question is confusing. I am just trying to figure out how to convert 3G to Wifi, and how other devices are going to connect to the Wi-Fi.

normally i like to think about it like this

tethering- usually the device connected to your laptop with the usb cable so only one connection at a time, unless maybe if you have a usb hub, then you may be able to split it

hotspot- basically the same as tethering except its all wireless, and multiple devices should connect easy but you should see slower speeds when more then one laptops using it (basically hotspot makes the phone a somewhat limited wireless router)

Trust me, tethering 1 device will be painfully slow. Forget adding additional devices at the same time.

There are ways to tether with out rooting cyogenmod tether and PDA. Net are some apps you can get from the playstore but they are not wireless and you need to installed software to your computer.
I never used them cause with this phone its just to easy to root.:)

You can join as many devices as you want to your hotspot, keeping in mind this will share bandwidth across all devices and increase the load on your phone.. you'll probably want to have it leaning up against something to maximize surface area contact with the air to maximize cooling, or at least put it on a cold, hard surface. Leaving it sitting on a blanket will probably cause it to heat up significantly.
