Can the Galaxy S3 "whimpy" banners be improved upon?

Some may be offended by the word "whimpy"

Understand, I am a new Galaxy S3 user (just bought mine yesterday) coming off of years of using an iPhone.

I am rather disappointed with the banner notifications. I must admit up front, I could very well be missing a setting in the phone that makes them better.

When email or chat text arrives, I hear my phone whistle. If I am fast enough, I can just see a small line of text along the top of the phone. That text quickly disappears.

On the iPhone, at least I was given a push notification banner to my lock or home screen, that stayed in place until I manually dismissed it. The banner was fairly large and prominent.

Now, I realize that the GS3 has a pull-down notification center. However, with my phone always having a lock screen, it's much easier to have push banner notifications there so I don't have to constantly unlock and then pull down the notification area.

Perhaps I just don't know how to use this phone properly yet.

Really enjoying the phone (except for battery life) and this forum. Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't know about for chat since I don't use it, but for SMS, you can use GO SMS or Handcent. They both have pop-up notifications if you want them. There are probably other ways too.

I use Go SMS and it gives pop ups, but I don't think they're what the OP is after. Having been on an iPhone before my S3 I know what s/he is referring to. You "wake" the iPhone and there's a notification saying you got a message. On the S3, you have to wake and unlock the phone to get the pop up in Go SMS. At least that's the only way I've been able to get the pop ups in Go SMS.

They are expanding the notification window in Jelly Bean. The update should be available 'very soon', which could mean next week or two months from now.

Ok, I don't use a lock screen, so I didn't know that. Which brings up another suggestion...lose the lock screen ;)

Or you could get Widgetlocker and there's probably an SMS widget you put there.

you dont need to unlock your screen to get to the notification bar...just pull it down...its a feature of ICS...

I believe you're referring to the notifications. With an iPhone and with Go SMS, there are popup windows that let you see the message. With an iPhone you don't have to do anything, the popup is there and is always there until you dismiss it. the notifications, you need to pull down and select the message. Now I don't have a problem with that, but the OP is asking about the constant "popup until dismissed" feature found on his previous phone.

Enable smart alert nder motion and swiping the message will show it. Seeing the whole, message on the screen is against my security policy.

Personally I dont like the txt messages popups from the iPhone. I value my privacy and I dont want that stuff popping up for anyone to view when I dont happen to be in the room. Plus if I remember correctly from my iPhone 3 days there is no way to turn off this "feature" unlike the almost unlimited customizations I can do on my android phones.

I know exactly what you're talking about...but someone mentioned having to unlock their screen to get to things...which is not true...

That was me....and I was referring to Go SMS to get the popup and not the notification...and I also mentioned that's how I have to do it unless there is another way.

When you say "swiping the message" are you referring to swiping the message in the notification? If so, well, that's not truly the popup the OP is after. S/He is looking for a popup without doing anything. At least that's how I understand it.
