Root Can we root and rom?

Does anyone know the availability of root with the pixels? I've read only Verizon will lock the bootloader so does that mean the models bought directly from Google will be customizable?

We won't know the full story until devs get their hands on the devices.

We expect that unlocking the bootloader will be doable as long as you don't buy from Verizon (if you are interested in root, not buying a Verizon phone seems a good idea generally). However, it looks like the way that people currently achieve a "systemless" root on a stock ROM will not work, so it seems that root will require modifying the system partition again. We don't yet know all of the implications. We expect custom ROMs to be possible (Google could block that, but if so why make the bootloader unlockable at all).

@scary alien has been posting some information here, while flar2 (developer of the ElementalX kernel) has posted his thoughts on this here.

Your best bet for an unlocked version would be to purchase the Pixel device from the Google Play Store as its possible that other carriers besides just VZW may also lock-down their bootloaders.

As far as root goes, devs (notably Chainfire and/or CCMT) will have to get their hands on a device to see how the latest root package may (or may not) work on these new devices.

There's no guarantee that root can be achieved (Google only promised the unlockable bootloader, after all), but being able to "play" with flashing alternate system / boot images should allow that to be done.

I'm thinking hard about buying a pixel xl this Friday from Verizon ($360 for the 128 gb). Anyone know if the VZ versions are rootable?

Nice! (I'm a little jealous :))

@JAy3001's link over at XDA above mentions that there's a dePixel8 tool available for unlocking the bootloader for the VZW model, but that it's exploit might be closed in a future (soon) security update (the unlockable bootloader is the linchpin for rooting).
