Help Canadian One X options and 4G questions

What's this I heard about the EVO 4G LTE not supporting 4G? Is this just with the first shipment units?

I am from Toronto. We only have LTE in the major cities (e.g. Toronto-metro, Montreal....etc.). But once you leave metropolitan Toronto and go into one of the many subdivisions you are left with 4G support (or 3G).

Will HTC be offering a firmware fix to enable 4G support?

Other than that the EVO 4G LTE sounds like a great phone. Rather get it over the One X. Though I am considering the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the upcoming iPhone 5 (if it comes with a 4.7-4.8" screen and widgets).

And is the dual-core version only for the US? What about Canada? Might have to get my hands on the international version. Assuming HTC does offer a fix for 4G support.

One has 4G/4G LTE support (SGS3) and the other does not (HTC EVO 4G LTE). What is HTC thinking omitting 4G support?? In Canada LTE is only available in the major cities (e.g. Toronto). If you venture just out of the metropolitan area to one of the subdivisions you only have 3G/4G. Hate to buy the HTC and be stuck with 3G when I'm out of LTE territory.

Does any one know if HTC is planning to fix this? Is it firmware fixable? Or will HTC owners be stuck with a 3G/4G LTE phone...that does everything else well?

I think I need to move your post over to the One X section, as that's the phone distributed in Canada, the Evo LTE is simply the Sprint version of it.

Our issue with LTE is that Sprint hasn't turned it on yet.

HTC doesn't really need to fix 4G.

The dual cores tend to appear on One X variants that support LTE. They are the equal of the quad cores - two fastest cores vs four slower cores - except for heavy gaming, then the quad may have the edge because of its GPUs, not cpu cores.

OK if I shift you to the One X forum?

Be my guest.

As I said. I just don't want to buy the EVO 4G LTE to find out I will forever only be able to access 3G/4G LTE networks. Depending where I am. In metropolitan TO or just outside the LTE zone.

Which is why I'm also looking at the Samsung GS3.

I think my point is - do not buy the Evo 4G LTE and expect it to work in anywhere on a Canadian LTE network.

There are many LTE frequencies. LTE works on the One X variants that come with LTE. The Evo 4G LTE is simply and basically the USA/Sprint variant's name for the One X with LTE.

And - if you don't want to access only 3G or 4G LTE networks - what would you like to access?

I think the Canadian One X is quad core and works on the carrier frequencies there.

I think you saw LTE in the Evo name and got a little confused - nothing personal, just saying, I think that happened.

The One X for your carrier is likely to use the same radios as the SGS3.

The HTCs are not broken. ;)

Just wanted to toss in my 2p.

I am in Toronto as well, and currently have a HOX on an LTE plan (testing it for a month).

With any LTE plan, when you loose signal, it then automatically jumps over to a 4G network. From 4G, it will drop eventually to an EDGE network (obviously, in remote areas).

As for LTE access here in the GTA: it does cover alot, but I find that LTE still just does not have the coverage that 4G does. That, and LTE simply does not have the same building 'depth penetration' (ie, you jump into an elevator, and you will most likely loose signal).

The only problem i have had is that it is rare to see 4 solid bars of LTE. I am so use to seeing full signal strength here on Rogers that it is more of a mental reconditioning, really.

LTE speeds: it is lightning. from my home office, I can get 28megs down, and roughly 17megs up. It is simply nuts.

To sum up: HTC One X is LTE. Here in Toronto it is fantastic, just get use to not seeing full 4 bars if you go with it.

Cheers.

V.
