Cannot Access Saved Google Maps Workout Internet Connection?

I'm away from home, using Google Maps for navigation. I knew Internet connectivity would be spotty or non-existant in some areas, so I downloaded a couple of maps. Problem is, once the Internet connection is lost, Google Maps will not let me access my saved maps. I try to open My Places, where I supposedly can access the offline maps, and I'm greeted with, not available, no service. If I cannot access the saved maps without a connection, what good is the feature?? It's as if I need to anticipate a lost connection before it happens, so I can switch to the saved maps while I still have a connection. Am I doing something wrong, or missing something???? All the Google support I've seen simply says open maps, go to My Places, and open the saved maps. Is there a workaround, or do I live with the way it is??? Thanks!!!

Hi, you can still access the saved maps - when you run maps offline it should return to the area displayed when last exited whilst online - it saves this by default. You can then zoom out, scroll to one of your saved areas, zoom in again and you will see street detail of that area.

Bear in mind that although you can get your location and track your progress using GPS, you can't search or use full navigation without a data connection.

Offline maps availability

It looks like Google have fixed this in the latest update (5th December), if you run Maps offline, tapping the search box now brings up the list of saved maps.
