cannot answer phone when locked

hi

I've had the phone a day and when it's locked (on but black screen, have to press top button to unlock it) and pattern recognition also on received calls go straigh to voicemail. If the phone is unlocked and on, ie when using it I can receive calls.

any ideas why phone does not take calls when locked??

sometimes when screen is idle, I miss calls as sliding the screen just does not work!
starting to dislike this phone now

Screen protector or case covering the proximity sensor?

today folk said my phone was busy when trying to cll, yet was sitting charging idle in my car, weird.
