cannot charge new battery

[Android Question]

My old battery was having a problem holding charge (batteries get old) so I bought a new battery. However the phone does not recognized the new batter (image on the screen is greyed out with an exclamation point), and it will not charge. Ho do I fix this. I have HTC Incredible 4G LTE.

If it's an aftermarket battery it could be the wrong one for the phone or it could be defective. If it's OEM, it's defective and they should replace it.
