Cannot enable mobile data - Star N9770

Hi All

First time post, have searched for anything similar but no luck.

I have just bought a 5.08" Star 9770 phone running Android 4.0.9 and have a problem with mobile data.

For those who don't know, this is a copy of a Galaxy Note but with dual sim capability.

Anyway, I have a Talkmobile sim, which worked fine on my Nokia N8 but I cannot get anywhere with this phone. I have downloaded the settings from Vodaphone and tried enabling that APN, I have also manually setup a new APN using the details from the talkmobile website - which are different to the Vodaphone ones with no luck. I have taken the phone to my local Vodaphone shop for them to have a look at it, with, again, no luck.

I am not particularly knowledgeable with Android but do have a 10.1 tab running ICS with a data only sim installed - but this required no setting up at all - and this works fine. I have no 2G or 3G symbol on the display with mobile data enabled or disabled - I would have expected to see this, but maybe I am wrong. I have tried sim slots 1 & 2 and a factory reset to no avail, so am currently tearing my hair out at the moment.

I have emailed the supplier in China and am waiting to hear from them, but if anyone could give me some pointers I would be very grateful.

It's like I am doing something very basic wrong but have no idea what.

TIA
Mike

Welcome heatserve, glad to have you apart of the forums :)

I haven't seen anyone with a similar problem, but did you try just factory resetting your phone just to check to see if that might fix it.

Otherwise you could try dialing: *#*#4636#*#* from there go into Phone Information and make sure the Radio is turned on to the appropriate bands (GSM/CDMA)

Hope this helps

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I have already tried a factory reset - no luck.

I entered the code and radio is on and the it is set to GSM/CDMA. The sim is in the slot marked GSM WCDMA whereas the other slot is only marked GSM. I know this phone is only enabled for 3G on one of the sims. The rest of the stuff means absolutely nothing to me at all.

The supplier has said that they have never experienced a phone with a genuine 3G problem and it is always an authorisation problem. My sim is registered for 3G with talkmobile, but surely I should have some sort of symbol in the status area of the phone showing 3G is available, shouldn't I?

As well as having mobile data enabled, I have enabled roaming and set the correct APN - is there something that I have missed do you think?

According to the bloke in the Vodaphone shop, there was nothing wrong with the APN settings and to be honest I was more than a bit disappointed with the lack of help he gave me - he was the one that sold me the sim

Many thanks for any help yu can give me.

Well do you have any other old sims around you could try haha, you might incur some roaming charges but you could try that.

Otherwise i would go back get a new sim try that, if that doesn't work then i would assume it was a hardware issue, unfortunately, you would have to return the phone, hopefully you can get a new one, or a different phone, whatever your preference is :)

Hopefully this helps, sorry for the bad news :(

Thanks. I'm really hoping it's not a hardware issue.

Would you know if a 3G symbol should appear on an android phone running ICS even if mobile data is not enabled?

Problem solved! I got talkmobile to send the auto configuration settings to the phone - dunno how they did this 'cos the n9770 isn't in their list. It configured talkmobile internet - which seems to have very few settings and no password and talkmobile WAP.

I have tried both and they both work equally slowly!

Many thanks for your help.

I had the same problem with this device on Vodafone. Vodafone did not have this device in their listing and so trying to send the auto configuration settings to the phone did not work. I called them up and they talked me through the APN settings which all appeared correct but the required PAP authentification was missing. ONce this was set it all worked well
