Root Cannot enter recovery on Droid X2 stock Gingerbread 2.3.5

Lurker
I just obtained a Droid X2 (M8870) and did a factory reset; it's running Gingerbread 2.3.5.

I'm attempting to root it using my Linux laptop. I can connect to the phone using adb and even get shell access, though without root privileges.

"adb reboot recovery" causes the device to reboot, but no connection with the laptop is re-established; similarly, if I use the phone's volume/power button combinations, I get the recovery boot logo, but no connection.

When I run "adb reboot-bootloader", it restarts device but never makes it past normal logo screen, nor does it re-establish connection with the laptop.

Similarly, if I use the X2's volume-down+power combination and select "fastboot", the phone indicates that it is starting fastboot protocol, but no connection is made with laptop and none of the phone's buttons alter its state.

So, I'm being quite successful in not bricking this thing, but I need root.

Any hints?
