Help Cannot play (most) .avi .mkv media files!!!

Newbie
I have tried using CCPlayer and MoboPlayer but I cannot get most of my .avi files and .mkv files to play. I am trying to load some kiddie movies on it so that my 4-year-old can be entertained on a road trip. Only one of the files worked (the file that works is a .mkv file...but my other .mkv and .avi files won't play). These files play perfectly fine on my PC using VLC media player. There is nothing special about the one file that does play as opposed to the others.

Can somebody please give me a clue? Is there another media player that works better, or just works?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! My road trip is tomorrow!

My model # is DISCO10. It's running Adroid 2.2-20110529. The kernel version is 2.6.32.9. I am running Tim's latest version 5 ROM.

I haven't had any issues with any file I throw at it. How much free memory does your system show? You could pick up a couple of apps like Android Assistant, or Cachemate and run them before trying too run the files.

How many files is it? The only problem I have had was one file that was extremely large was a little slow to load but smotheed out after 30 or 40 seconds.

Here is another clue - I copied a file to an external USB thumb drive and the file played just fine!!! But when I try to play the file that's stored on the micro sd card that came with my tablet (using CCPlayer) it says "file does not exist or is not supported" after I select 'play.' The file does exist - otherwise how could I attempt to play it with CCPlayer?!?! Does that make sense to anyone? The file will play off of a thumb drive but not the micro sd card?

Lol, give a guy a sec to respond. Check your PM. But it sounds like the card is your problem. It's possible, but I doubt it, you could have a bum port or a bad fit.

It will be the sdcard I had 32gb that did the same would play music stored on root of SD but not in directories also all video files said cannot play possible corrupted, yet plays great on 8gb.

Try using MPlayer.for.android.V2, quite a few are suggesting this is best player.

Try putting all movie media files in a directory called Movies in root of memory

Try turning media scanning on before playing anything (if you have it turned off by default?- use GScript for this as advised in Tims Tips page)

:)

This does all sound like the application can't find the file. Most of these players require media discovery to be run to find the file locations before they will be able to play them, it is disabled by default on Tims latest firmwares, click on the Media scan on/off gscript icon and then insert your card. Once its finished the scan you can run the script again to turn scanning off. If you move the media files you have to go through the same procedure again.

I guess some apps will expect media files to be at /sdcard and as Tims firmware alters the mount points of the card it causes problems.

Thanks a lot for the tips, guys! I haven't tried the media scan thing - I'll try it soon. My USB drive kept wiggling and the video would lock up - much to my 4 year old's chagrin. Also, some of the media files just won't fast forward in CC Player or MoboPlayer. WTF is up with that? Anyway, I'll try the gscript thing this afternoon.

Check it - I call the SuperPad the Chi-pad. I tell everybody I know about it so that they'll know that there's a cheaper alternative to the ipad. I really despise Apple (I guess I'm a player-hater). One thing I HATE is their proprietary charging connector. Why the heck can't they just use a USB port like any other sane company? Also, I have a power that plugs into the cigarette lighter in a car. My wife's iphone won't charge from it, but every other d@mn device that uses A/C power works just fine. I swear. Anyway, this is neither the time nor place for Apple rants.

Anyway, if my co-worker hadn't have clued me in about this SuperFly Chi-pad, I'd be in the dark. This thing needs more advertising. :D

And it's amazing that people like this Mr. Tim are out there working arduously for the rebellion. He's the man. He should be a millionaire if he's not one already. :)
