Help Cannot play videos

SBMongoos

Newbie
I transferred some videos onto my MicroSD card. I have mpg, mp4 and mkv. Not matter what player I try either the video starts to play and then I get the message :"cannot play video - Sorry, this video cannot be played", stops after ~10/20 seconds and goes to the next video (and so on) or it hangs at about the same point. I've transferred a video to the phone memory itself but I have the same problem.

I've tried the Samsung video player, the one provided by Google and I installed MX Player.

These all work fine on my PC and play with no issues.

Any ideas? I've been reading about similar issues but not finding out solutions. Some have said they have run into the same issue trying to watch a video they recorded with the phone itself. I just recorded a video on the phone about 1 minute long and it played. Did record much and not sure it matters.

There could be a problem with the encoding of the Videos that is not compatible with the S3. Mpg, Avi and Mkv are just containers. It would depend on the codec that was used to encode them. Are these videos ones that you recorded or got from some where else?

I had some videos in weird avi formats that the s3 didn't like but plays fine on the computer. I ended up converted it to a standard avi format and lower the resolution to 720p and works great afterwards. Just an idea.

Good point. I've become a bit rusty at this. I have a couple of apps that I should probably update and I believe I read about one that has the S3 in mind. Apparently for this reason...codecs.

I tried playing the movies at work through iTunes and had the same problem as my S3. So, I wonder if its an HDCP thing or DRM?

Updated one of my converter apps (stay current right) and converted one of the MKV to MP4 formats (both formats were failing on phone earlier) and the first test works just fine. So, it looks like a codec (container) issue at this point.
