Help Cannot see external SD card in Window Explorer

Phone: MotoG3 - Android 6.0
Using ES File Explorer on my phone I can see all the files (photos) on my 32GB external SD card. However, when I connect my phone via a USB cable to my WIndows 10 PC File Explorer does not detect the external SD card (it does detect the internal SD card). I have selected "Use USB for Transfer files (MTP)". What else do I need to allow me to transfer the files on my phone to my PC?

Wait, if you set your sdcard as internal storage then you won't be able to access it.

I looked at the link but this did not help. My SD card is no set up as internal storage as far as I am aware. How do I check?
