Help Cannot sync people or callendar (screenshot)

So I'm trying to Sync my phone for the first time, but the main thing I wanted to Sync, People, isn't working correctly.

When I try to select people, it's all grayed out:

Also, in the Sync program on my phone, even after I hit "Sync" (whether I do it from the phone or the computer), it always says:

History
Last synchronization: No synchronization records.

So apparently even when I try to sync, it's not working.

Ideas?

Thanks.

do you have microsoft outlook? on my laptop that doesnt have outlook mine is greyed out but on my other laptop with outlook i can sync everything just fine

No, I do not have outlook.

Excuse this noob question, but what exactly is "syncing" anyway?

I just want to back up my contacts and stuff like a computer harddrive back up. Is that syncing?

syncing is just a way to transfer data between devices this can be done through bluetooth(if both devices have bluetooth), or a data cable

easiest way i have found to back up/sync contacts without using htc sync is this

1.) go into your contact list on your phone, menu-import/export-export to sd card-phone
Take note of the file name created.

2.)Connect your phone to your pc (make sure you have it connected as disk drive not htc sync)

3.)get on your computer log into your gmail account, top left click contacts, toward the top middle of the screen you should see a more actions button click that then go to import. a new window pops up click browse-computer-removeable disk (mine says removeable disk drive F) now look for the file name created when you exported the contacts to the sd card in step 1.
