Cannot take 8MB Resolution Pictures

Hello,
I have set my camera settings to 8MB size pictures, autoflash, and superfine. And there is 16Gigs free memory. After I take the picture, the image is never beyond 2MB picture size. Why? No matter what I do, I cannot get the camera to take 8MB pictures.

Welcome to the forums!

Your camera is 8 MP (megapixels).

If you assume the typical rgb model, 3 subpixels per pixel (and that's not how cameras work but let's go there for the sake of discussion) then you have 24 mega subpixels - and at one byte per subpixel after processing the raw camera sensor data, each of your pictures would really be 24 MB.

That's not practical so the images are converted and compressed into the 2 MB jpg files you have.

Third party apps can let you have some control over the amount of jpg compression, just like many simple digital cameras do. As I recall, your stock camera app has that fixed and you can't adjust it.

For one example, check out Camera 360 - and I'm sure that there are others.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your quick reply. Here is my problem: I have a regular digital camera that I use to take pictures for stock photo uploads. These must be at least 6mb pictures for clarity and ease of manipulation. But I do not always have my camera with me, but I do always have my phone with me. And sometimes those once in a lifetime photo ops appear and I must use my phone. The problem is the stock photo site ONLY accepts 6mb photos and up. Is there a way to keep the raw photo image uncompressed?
Thanks again..Bruce

Maybe.

I can understand where you're coming from - I use a root mod to take raw image photos on my phone and post process them as I please.

This has been the Holy Grail for those of us seeking the best performance out of our cell phone cameras.

The good news is that Google, finally, has begun to include access to the raw sensor data in their most recent application program interface (API).

The bad news is that we're locked out of that path not owning the latest Nexus devices.

But the good news is that thanks to devs who are photo savvy, we are not alone.

Please check in our root forum and over at XDA for a solution that may work for you, either via a custom rom or a custom app that will work on your phone.

Search for "camera raw image" in the Play Store - maybe DSLR Camera Pro or something I've not tried will get you there.

At this point you'll need some detailed advice from an SGS3 photo shooter - hopefully you'll find one among the many posting.

Best luck my friend, hope I've gotten you pointed in the right direction.

I wouldn't think any camera phone was capable of delivering the quality that stock photo agencies require. Even if it was 20 megapixels, there would be more noise given the small pixels.

Good luck in whatever you decide. Have you considered some of the newer mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses? They can be half the size of a dslr.

You're right about the noise but may be only partially right about what's possible.

I have an HTC One M8 with the camera that everyone loves to hate - and there's a big difference with 24 MB 16-bit TIFFs from what's built-in.

Before we get to sensor noise - and it is legion, especially as we go up in sensor MP - we also have to deal with poor lenses and inadequate multicoating.

That said, the SGS3 has one hell of a good sensor in its favor and you can cure the insane wide angle distortion we all suffer with Photo Editor Pro (or GIMP or Photoshop).

As for your very valid suggestion let's not forget add-ons like -

But at the end of the day, the best camera in the world is the one you have when the picture is there for the taking -
