Cannot turn off predictive text off

galaxyone

Newbie
I cannot turn Predictive text off, since it seems after an update from Google.

My phone is a Vodafone 875 with Jellybean.

When in Language & input, the following Keyboard & Input Methods are available.

1) Android keyboard (English UK), ticked but greyed out and not selectable.

2) Google voice typing, Automatic and selectable/unselectable

3) TouchPal input, selectable/unselectable.

I can change parameters within the Android keyboard settings and within the Advanced part, but nothing makes any difference.

If I manage to turn it off, this is only temporary until text is used again. In addition it appears I have an extra line of characters above the normal qwerty keyboard.

Any clues/tips of what I can uninstall/delete to rectify this.

Thanks

One thing you can try is to uninstall the updates. That will rule out any other possibilities of what is causing the problem, and it should keep it from happening again if you don't use the automatic update option on Google Play, which I personally never use.

OK,

Had alook at the link to xda.

But this seems to be for 'Autocorrect', where i cannot turn 'Predictive' off.

Going back to my post: 2) Google voice typing, Automatic and selectable/unselectable

The automatic is greyed out and cannot be changed/turned off, yet I can tick it to select or unselect. But nothing can be done with Android keyboard as this totally greyed out preventing any changes.

thanks

Hi galaxyone,

Do you know what version of the Android/Google Keyboard you have? In the keyboard settings, you should be able to scroll all the way down to an About menu.

If it's an older one, you may want to try installing the Google Keyboard from the Play Store, which allows Google to update the keyboard separately from a larger OS update.

I'm running 3.1.19633.1257820 (holy version number!), and I have an option in the Google Keyboard Settings for "Next-word suggestions." You should be able to uncheck that option to disable the word predictions.

thanks

The android keyboard is v4.1.2-610838, the only place I could find this info was from the applications list. The keyboard in language & input shows nothing as you say.

this problem came to light over the weekend for whatever reason

thanks again

Do you have the "Next-word Suggestions" option like I do? If not, try grabbing the updated Google Keyboard from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin

search

The link shows the keyboard I had, which is just a plain qwerty board without any extra lines above or below the keys.

Yes I have 'next-word suggestions, not selected and is greyed out.

It's weird, if I go to Google Play store. The keyboard is as it was (without predictive text & symbols) and yet if I go to FB, Messenger, Notes or SMS text then we have the predictive text or a line of symbols above the keyboard.

thanks

After reading through this thread twice, I have a couple of suggestions/comments:

  1. The OP listed three input options available on the device, but nowhere is it stated which one is currently the default. I think it's a safe assumption that the current default is "Android Keyboard", but I thought it was worth a mention since the problem seems to remain unsolved
  2. When options (like word suggestions) are enabled, apps can allow/disallow them for each text field presented to the user, if the keyboard allows this. For example, when using Google Keyboard and entering a URL in Chrome, or a query in Google Search, no suggestions are offered because that's what the app specifies for those fields; buy when using Swype, suggestions are alwasy offered because it ignores the apps' request to disable the suggestions.
  3. For whichever input method is current, try clearing data for that "app" in the applications manager. This may wipe out your user dictionary, but it may also clear up the word suggestions issue.

OK,

Problem still here.

Cleared most of the downloaded apps, also no new apps have been downloaded when this problem started.

Its annoying when I go to 'Play Store' and 'Gmail' or 'Google browser' for an example, the keyboard is correct with no predictive text etc. and with 4 lines of characters on the qwerty keyboard.

Yet if using sms messaging, FB messenger, FB and I then have 5 lines of characters on the keyboard with the predictive text.

Might have to resort to a reset, because its really bugging me.

thanks

Yeah I think I've cracked it.

Looking through the Android keyboard listing, found 'Show Correction Suggestion'.
This being set to 'Always Show' and its set to 'Always Hide', and bingo it's cracked. Despite the Predictive text etc turned off and disabling certain apps etc and clearing data etc.

So I know next time if it happens again with an update etc.

So thanks guys for your help, hope this is of some use to others.

thanks
