im downloaded a new kies (it looks similar to itunes!!) but it tells me there is no update available for my sgs.

Not every SGS can be updated at a moments notice, I'm still running 2.2, I know a few people stuck with 2.1 atm. While several people are running 2.3 or newer.

I cannot help you further though, obtaining the latest version via rooting phone etc is not my area of expertise.
